Carroll Merchants looked sharp in every aspect on Monday in their return to baseball in Carroll after a 2-year hiatus. The Merchants made a splash in the Mink League in their first game, rolling to an 11-2 win over Des Moines, scoring 11 straight runs. They threw 4 pitchers in the game, allowing just 3 hits and 2 earned runs. They walked 9, but found ways to pitch out of problems. Des Moines had 5 guys reach 2nd base after the 1st inning as the Merchants turned two double plays along with two fielders choices that cut down the lead runner. Ryan Riddle, Alex Johnson, Zach Shastay and Sam Hanson combined to strikeout 13 batters. The offense was equally impressive, garnering 15 hits and scoring 11 runs. They had eight different players pick up a base hit and worked themselves out 4 walks and getting 1 player hit-by-pitch. Four players had multi hit games with Kaleb Freeman and Jordan Mathewson finishing with 4 and 3 hits respectively.
Des Moines struck first to begin the game, using a hit-by-pitch and walk to put runners on. They scored on an RBI single and groundout. The Merchants answered right away, Jordan Mathewson doubled in the bottom 1st and scored on a single by Kaleb Freeman who then scored on a single by Parker Ingram on a inside pitch that broke his bat. Carroll stranded two on base in the 1st inning. They took their first lead of the season in the 2nd inning, Michael Alt singled and moved into scoring position on a single by Jordan Matthewson. Alt scored on an error, giving Carroll a 3-2 lead. The game stayed that way until the 5th when Carroll blew it open. They scored 8 times in the 5th on 6 hits and some defensive mistakes by the Peak. The big hits came from Andrew Schroeder, who drove in 2-runs with a single. Garrett Freeman, Michael Alt, Kaleb Freeman and Jordan Matthewson all had RBI singles. Carroll batted 11 guys in the inning.
The Merchants return to action on Tuesday when they host Chillicothe on 93.7 KKRL at 6:35.
