The Audubon Wheelers will enter the playoffs with a close win as they were nearly upset by Woodbine Friday night.

The early parts of this contest were controlled by the Wheelers by a wide margin. In the first quarter, Aaron Olsen was able to get the Wheelers down to the eight-yard line and tumbled in for the touchdown and later completed the two-point conversion. Olsen had a big night carrying the ball as he’d end up with six rushing touchdowns. His second of said touchdowns came with 5:12 left in the first quarter from 13-yards out to get Audubon up 14-0. Woodbine eventually responded with a touchdown with 2:44 left in the quarter and got a successful two-point conversion, cutting down the lead to 14-8. The second quarter was where the Wheelers’ offense popped off. Olsen got three more touchdowns in the quarter and got the Wheelers up 42-8 at one point. The longest of those touchdown runs was from 44-yards out. Evan Alt was able to get himself a seven-yard touchdown run to give Olsen a slight break from his big scoring night. Woodbine would eventually get the momentum back with two touchdown drives with only 52 seconds left in the quarter to enter halftime down 48-22.

Woodbine really started to shut down the Wheelers in the second half and threatened to take the lead. While it took nearly the entire third quarter, the Tigers got a successful touchdown drive with 3:13 left to cut down the Audubon lead further to 48-28. Olsen got another long touchdown run from 30-yards out to get the Wheelers up 56-28. Woodbine got another late touchdown drive in the third quarter with 13 seconds left to be down 56-34 going into the fourth quarter. The Wheelers didn’t seem to have much success offensively in the fourth quarter as Woodbine inched closer to the lead. The Tigers got started with a touchdown drive with 7:01 left in the contest to be down 56-42. The potential comeback became more real when the Tigers got yet another touchdown in the quarter with 2:36 left to cut down the Audubon lead further to 56-48. Luckily for the Wheelers, their defense was able to come up with some big plays throughout and kept them ahead in the end by a score of 56-48.

Zeke Konkler was the defensive leader of the team in this game recording 10 total tackles. Lane Barber was able to break through the trenches for seven total tackles, one sack, and a tackle for loss. The win elevates The Wheelers to 4-5 overall on the season and 4-2 in the district, giving them the third-place spot. They will head to the playoffs and in the first round Friday, they will travel to take on the top team in 8-man football, Remsen St. Mary’s.
