The Kuemper Knights continue to impress in 2022 as they had a come-from-behind victory against Atlantic in week two.

In the first half, Kuemper held the lead for a large portion of the first two quarters, but Atlantic found ways to sneak into the lead late. Kuemper held the early 3-0 advantage in the first quarter until Atlantic found a guy open in the endzone with 22 seconds left to lead 7-3. In the second quarter, it was deja vu as Kuemper took the 10-7 lead and the Trojans with 21 seconds left found a way to get a late touchdown and two-point conversion to lead 15-10 going into halftime. Kuemper Head Coach Ryan Steinkamp says Atlantic did their homework and worked on not allowing Logan Sibenaller and the other Kuemper running backs to get loose enough to make plays.

Kuemper got after it to start off the second half. After Atlantic strikes first to lead 22-10 in the third quarter, Kuemper scores in two plays to cut down the Atlantic lead to 22-17. The momentum shifted quickly to Kuemper’s favor as Atlantic fumbled the football that was recovered by the Knights and promptly brought down the field to score another touchdown to give Kuemper the 24-22 lead. In the fourth quarter. Christopher Mohr was able to pick off the Trojans for a pick-six and give the Knights all the momentum they needed to win. In this game, DJ Vonnahme was accurate, going 14 for 22 in passing attempts for 239 yards and four touchdowns.

While Sibenaller couldn’t make a significant impact in the running game, he made up for it defensively with seven total tackles. William Healy had a standout game defensively with eight total tackles and five solo tackles. Trevor Rial was the main target for Vonnahme as he came away with two touchdowns off 55 yards and five receptions. After a standout second half, the Kuemper Knights stood victorious by a final score of 37-22. Kuemper Head Coach Ryan Steinkamp said after the game that his guys were making big plays in the second half and that he believes this is a great team this season that will do great things.

The win elevates the Kuemper Knights to 2-0 on the season. They are home this week as they play host to Greene County. Listen to the Greene County at Kuemper matchup this Friday on 1380 AM, 95.1 FM KCIM with Tyler Brunner starting around 6:25.
