Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Audubon, CRB, and Glidden Ralston Softball Pick Up Wins Friday; Area Teams Go 3-3

A battle in the Rolling Valley Conference ensued Friday afternoon when Glidden Ralston hosted Ar-We-Va.

The Wildcats are off to a great start to the season, winning their first three games and looking to make it four while the Rockets won their first game of the season over Whiting the day prior. Ar-We-Va’s Jamie Hausman and Maggie Ragaller both were able to get hits off of Vanessa Koehler but were unable to score in the top of the first. Glidden Ralston struck first in the bottom of the second Brileigh Bock scored during an awkward situation in the infield for Ar-We-Va to get ahead 1-0. The Wildcats added two more runs to their total to pad their lead when Vanessa Koehler belted out an RBI triple to score Brenna Bowman and then she later scored off a passed ball to give them the 3-0 lead. 

Koehler was also solid inside the circle as well, giving up four hits and recording 12 strikeouts. Amber Ragaller for Ar-We-Va played well too, but gave up 12 hits, eight runs, and recorded three strikeouts. Maggie Ragaller attempted to get the Rockets back on track with a nicely hit triple in the fifth inning, but she was left stranded. Glidden Ralston was able to put the game away for good with five runs added to their total in the bottom of the sixth. Addy Boell got an RBI double, Koehler got another RBI single, and Tiela Janssen had a tremendous 2 RBI triple to give the Wildcats an 8-0 lead. Koehler and her defense put the game away with a strikeout and two pop ups to the shallow infield to win it 8-0. 

The Wildcats are now 4-0 to begin the season while Ar-We-Va falls to 1-3. Glidden Ralston is back in action on Tuesday, May 30th when they travel to take on West Harrison and Ar-We-Va will travel to take on Coon Rapids Bayard on the same day.

Friday’s matchup between Coon Rapids Bayard and Boyer Valley ended early when the Crusaders 10 runed the Bulldogs after five innings.

The young Crusaders squad still has some figuring out to do when it comes to experience and play time, but this win was a nice milestone in the early season. Both team were scoreless in the first inning before the Crusaders came alive for the rest of the game. They’d get three on the board in the second inning to match the Bulldogs’ one run in the top of the inning, one in the third, a massive seven in the fourth inning, and one final run to top it all off in the fifth. Coon Rapids Bayard had some help in this game as they were walked 10 times and only had eight hits off 12 runs. Anna Hart had the biggest day at the plate, going 2-2 with two runs scored and a triple. She also did well in the circle, giving up three hits, no earned runs, and recording four strikeouts in the win. 

The Crusaders got an early Memorial Day surprise with a 12-1 final score in five innings. The Crusaders notch their first win of the season and are now 1-2 overall. They are back in action on Tuesday, May 30th when they host Ar-We-Va.

After a tied ball game going into the bottom of the sixth, the Audubon Wheelers were able to pull out a clutch win Friday night to win three straight games. 

After dropping their first game of the season to Earlham, Audubon has been on a roll with two straight victories against Riverside and AHSTW. Neither Treynor or Audubon were able to record a run in the first two innings until Audubon was able to strike in the third inning. Mattie Nielsen got an RBI double when she scored Michelle Brooks and she later scored off a wild pitch. Kali Irlmeier got an RBI double to score Jordan Porsch and she too later scored off a wild pitch to give the Wheelers the 4-0 lead. Treynor responded well with four runs of their own while keeping Audubon at bay offensively. Delandey Mathews for the Cardinals got a home run to give them their first run and in the fifth, they scored three runs off a passed ball, a wild pitch, and a hit by pitch with the bases loaded. Alexis Obermeier was able to help the Wheelers get out of trouble with a strikeout and a grounder to three stopped Treynor from getting any more runs. Obermeier in the circle allowed four runs, three of them earned, off four hits with 10 strikeouts to her name in the win.

Notched at 4-4, Audubon was able to come up with some late runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. Obermeier reached on an error and got to third off another error while Michelle Brooks got a deep triple out to right field to score Obermeier and later she scored off an error to give the Wheelers a 6-4 lead. Treynor’s chances at a late game comeback were spoiled in the top of the seventh in part by Obermeier who had two strikeouts and a dropped strike for a 2-3 play to give Audubon the win. The Wheelers won three in the row to end the week with a record of 3-1. 

Audubon is back in action on Tuesday, May 30th when they travel to take on Underwood.

Tri-Center at IKM-Manning

The IKM-Manning Wolves were in control of Tri-Center defensively but let a few runs slip away in the seventh on Friday night. 

The Wolves the day prior was able to pick up their first win of the season against Boyer Valley and looked for win number two against the Trojans. In the top of the first, Tri-Center was able to get on the board with a run scored and led 1-0. IKM-Manning was able to match that run when Laura McCarville got herself an RBI triple to score Karlee Arp and tie the game at 1-1. Elle Richard did a nice job in the circle, allowing only three runs off seven hits and recording three strikeouts. The score was at a standstill until the top of the seventh when the Trojans struck. They were able to get two more runners home and took a late 3-1 lead over the Wolves. Ella Richards was able to reach first off a single, but a 1-2 play and a strikeout from Tri-Center ended the game to give the Trojans the late 3-1 win. 

IKM-Manning falls to 1-3 overall on the season with that loss. They are back in action on Tuesday, May 30th when they travel to take on Missouri Valley.

Pocahontas Area at South Central Calhoun

The South Central Calhoun Titans rounded out a full slate of games this week with a home game against Pocahontas Area Friday.

The Titans had little breaks during their five game week to start the 2023 season. They were able to hold a solid lead over the Indians to start the contest after Pocahontas Area led 2-0 going into the bottom of the first. Keira Hammen got herself another home run hit this season that scored herself and Adlen Wheelock to tie the game at 2-2. The Titans were able to grab the lead in the bottom of the second when Gracie Hungate and Mady Smidt scored to give them the 4-2 lead. The Indians spoiled that lead with five runs in the top of the third inning. They’d get those runs off three hits and one walk. The Titans were able to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth with two more runs added to their total. 

Morgan McChesney got the inning started with a double and was brought home off a single from Adlen Wheelock and she later scored to regain the lead for the Titans at 6-5. Just like in the third inning, Pocahontas Area played spoiler in the top of the seventh when they had seven runs added to their lead to gain the 14-6 lead. South Central Calhoun was unable to pull out a comeback victory and were trounced 14-6. The loss drops the Titans to 0-5 on the season. They have a much needed break until Wednesday, May 31st when they take on GTRA.
