Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper Girls See 2nd Half Lead Slip Away in Loss

Kuemper struggled most of the day on offense but found themselves with a 10-point lead in the 3rd quarter. That lead dissipated by the end of the 3rd quarter and Denison Schleswig closed the game on a 28-10 run to win 44-36. Both teams were out of rhythm in the 1st half with the teams combining for more turnovers than points. Kuemper finished with 29 turnovers and shot 30% from the field. Defensively they held Denison Schleswig to 7-points in the 1st quarter and nearly pitched a shutout in the 2nd quarter. The Monarchs scored their only points of the half with less than 0:30 left in the half. Both teams scored 3-points in the 3rd quarter and Kuemper led 13-10 going to the locker room.

The Knights did trail in the 1st half as Aubrey Heuton hit a pair of free throws to put them ahead 2-0. After a Monarch bucket tied it the Knights edged away with Heuton hitting a three and Karsyn Overmohle making it a 7-2 lead . Elsa Tiefenthaler kept the Knights in the lead with a pair of free throws and a bucket as the Monarchs stayed close, down 10-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. Neither team scored in the first-four minutes of the 2nd quarter with Elsa Tiefenthaler hitting a free throw with 3:48 left to put Kuemper up 11-7. Lauren Boell followed it with an offensive rebound and putback and Kuemper led 13-7. It stayed that way until Kiana Schulz hit a three from the corner with under 0:30 left in the to pull Denison Schleswig within 13-10.

Lauren Boell took over in the 3rd for Kuemper, scoring the first-two baskets, building the lead to 17-10. Elsa Tiefenthaler hit a three and Frannie Glynn scored inside and Kuemper went up 22-14. A pair of Karsyn Overmohle free throws extended the lead to 26-16. Kuemper went cold and began turning the ball over and Denison Schleswig began getting dribble penetration and was able to establish Mayah Slater inside. They pulled within 26-21 before Lauren Boell scored to extend the lead to 7. The Monarchs scored 5 straight, pulling within 28-26 but Aubrey Heuton put Kuemper up 29-26 at the end of the 3rd. Denison Schleswig opened the 4th quarter with a three, tying the game at 29. Karsyn Overmohle kept the Knights up with a basket but Addison Inman scored a few moments later and Denison Schleswig had their first lead of the game. They extended the lead to 37-31. Kuemper pulled within 39-36 on a pair of free throws by Frannie Glynn but never got closer.

Lauren Boell paced the Knights with 12-points and 16 rebounds. Elsa Tiefenthaler added 7-points and Aubrey Heuton and Karsyn Overmohle both scored 6-points. Frannie Glynn pulled down 6 rebounds and Overmohle had 3 steals.

The Knights fall to 0-2 and will host Harlan on Tuesday on KCIM.
