Audubon overcame a pair of turnovers and a 364-yard offensive output by Baxter with 327-yards on the ground for a convincing victory. The win was the 7th in a row for the Wheelers, clinching an outright district title. The Wheelers built an early lead and maintained the lead throughout the game. The defense stepped came up with a turnover and held the Bolts to 12-points after the 1st quarter. The Wheelers scored on their first-four possessions, helping build a 28-14 lead early in the 2nd quarter.
Audubon trailed early as Baxter took their opening drive for a touchdown, scoring on a 34-yard run with 10:23 left in the quarter. The two-point conversion was good and Audubon found themselves down 8-0 early. It didn’t take long for the Wheelers to answer. Aaron Olsen picked up 17-yards for a 1st down and three plays later Evan Alt scored on a 12-yard run. The Wheelers went for two and didn’t get it and trailed 8-6 with 8:00 left in the quarter. Baxter failed on a 4th down and 7 from midfield on their next possession, setting up the Wheelers in good field position. Aaron Olsen made them pay, running for a 40-yard touchdown on the first play and Audubon went up 12-8 with 6:58 left in the opening quarter. Baxter answered this time. scoring on a 22-yard pass, tying the score at 14 with 3:48 left in the quarter. The Wheelers went back to work with Olsen running for 17-yards to set up a 21-yard run for a touchdown by Evan Alt. The Wheelers were up 20-14 at the end of the 1st quarter. Baxter had a nice drive on their next possession, looking to tie the game or take the lead. They marched to the Wheelers 15-yard line but turned it over on downs, failing on a 4th and 6. Audubon struck quickly again as Aaron Olsen took it 45-yards for a touchdown on the sixth play of the drive. The Wheelers went up 28-14 and looked to be in control. Baxter had an answer again, driving for a touchdown on a 12-yard run. The Bolts were down 28-20 with 1:29 left in the half. The Wheelers fumbled on their next drive when they looked like they may score again, giving the Bolts the ball at the Bolts 22-yard line. Colton Hansen and Austin Christensen combined on a sack to end the half as the Wheelers defense came up with a big stop just before half.
The Wheelers went three and out to start the 2nd half but the defense made a big stop on 4th down. The Wheelers moved down the field, scoring on a 10-yard pass from Aaron Olsen to Austin Christensen. Th Wheelers were up 34-20 with 5:45 left in the 3rd. The Wheelers defense stopped Baxter on 4th down again, taking over at their own 34-yard line. It looked they would blow the game open, driving into the 1-yard line but the Wheelers fumbled and Baxter recovered, keeping them within two scores. A Bolt 34-yard gain early in their next drive, set up a 36-yard touchdown run to pull the Bolts within 34-26 early in the 4th quarter. Audubon needed an answer and got it. They moved the ball downfield, getting down to the 2-yard line. Carson Wessel ran for the touchdown won 4th down and goal and Audubon extended the lead to 42-26 with 3:46 left in the game. Austin Christensen sealed the win for the Wheelers with an interception, allowing the Wheelers to run out the clock after picking up a 1st down.
Aaron Olsen ran for 223-yards and a pair of touchdowns while throwing it only 3 times but one going for a touchdown. Evan Alt added 101-yards and scored twice. Austin Christensen had both receptions for the Wheelers with one touchdown. Ely Jorgensen and Evan Alt led the Wheelers with 6.5 tackles each.
Audubon moves to 7-1 overall and 6-0 in the district. They open their postseason run with a home game against Boyer Valley on Friday.
