Carroll At Winterset

Carroll picked up their first conference win and second straight win with a hard-fought road win at Winterset. Carroll came out quickly, taking the first two sets, winning by 5 and 7 points respectively. Winterset, having topped the Tigers on Saturday in Rockwell City responded and got the Tigers out of system and rhythm until Carroll made a run in set 5. The Huskies took sets three and four, forcing the 5th set. They took an early lead but Carroll responded with a run to grab the lead and the win. Carroll finished the night with a .080 kill efficiency, finishing with 38 kills. Their serve struggled at times, finishing at 88.2% with 4 aces. Carroll had 13 blocks.

Mollie Feld led the Tigers with 13 kills and a .233 kill efficiency. Olivia Rowedder added 10 kills and Amanda Wardell had 6 kills and a team high 6 blocks. Riley Nagl dished out 27 assists and led the team with 21 digs. Marasyn Wittrock had 19 digs, Averi Burke with 16 digs and Olivia Rowedder 17 digs.  Rowedder and Amanda Wardell each had 2 aces.

Carroll improves 3-11 overall and 1-2 in the Raccoon River Conference. They host their own tournament on Saturday.

Ar-We-Va At Paton Churdan

Ar-We-Va was able to pull away late in sets one and two on their way to a sweep of Paton Churdan in Rolling Valley Conference match on Thursday. The first-two sets were tight until late as set one was tied twice and had a lead change, but neither team had a big lead until Ar-We-Va scored seven of the last nine points. Emma Leiting helped Ar-We-Va with a late service run, featuring a pair of aces. Mia Russell helped Paton Churdan to an early 6-2 lead with a kill, followed by back-to-back aces. Paton Churdan led by as many as 4 before Ar-We-Va rallied and took the lead at 8-7. Paton Churdan tied it at 8 but Trista Reis gave Ar-We-Va the lead for good at 9-8. Ar-We-Va stretched their lead to 13-9 but Paton Churdan fought back, pulling within 15-14 and 18-16 on another Mia Russell ace.

The second set was even tighter, with seven lead changes and eight ties. Ar-We-Va built a 9-4 lead on a kill by Delaney Schurke but Paton Churdan stormed back, tying it on a kill by Grace Cullum. Paton Churdan went up 10-9, then the game went back and forth until Annalee Wittrock had an ace to put Ar-We-Va up 16-15. Ar-We-Va extended the lead to 19-15, then put the set away with kills by Morgan Berg, Delaney Schurke and an ace from Trista Reis to end it at 25-16.

Reis started at the service line for Ar-We-Va, helping them jump out 12-0 to start the third set. Azaya Martinez subbed in and had a pair of aces during that run to go with six aces from Reis in the first 10 points. Paton Churdan didn’t quit, fighting back with a 9-2 run, pulling within 14-9 but Ar-We-Va answered, getting kills from Annalee Wittrock and Trista Reis before Amber Ragaller ended the match with a kill.

Annalee Wittrock had a team high 6 kills for Ar-We-Va, followed by 4 kills from both Morgan Berg, Emma Leiting and Trista Reis. Delaney Schurke had 3 kills along with 8 digs and Amber Ragaller added 3 kills to go with 23 assists and 3 aces. Reis had a team high 7 aces while Witrock and Leiting both had 4 aces.

Mia Russell had a team high 4 aces for Paton Churdan and Kaliyah Minnehan and Ella Tasler added 4 digs each. Grace Cullum finished with a pair of assists.

Ar-We-Va improves to 1-6 and heads to West Harrison on Saturday for a tournament while Paton Churdan falls to 0-4 and will host West Harrison on Thursday.

Audubon suffered a tough loss at home on Thursday, falling in four to Tri Center. The Wheelers finished with 38 kills but hit .065, making 29 errors. They dropped the opening set, but battled back to win set two by 2-points. Audubon struggled in serve receive along with finding consistency in getting their attacks to fall. Those two things hurt in sets three and four as Tri Center won both sets 25-17. The Wheelers were strong defensively at the net, finishing with 9 blocks.

Mattie Nielsen and Harlow Miller continued their strong seasons at the net with Nielsen finishing with 15 kills and Miller 13 kills. Addie Hocker had 30 assists to go with 5 kills, 7 digs and 3 aces. Anna Larsen added 18 digs and a pair of aces, Kadence Brannan-Sporrer had 15 digs and Michelle Brooke had 8 digs.

The Wheelers slip to 9-4 overall and 1-2 in the Western Iowa Conference. They head to the Carroll Tournament on Saturday.

IKM-Manning played one of their better matches this season, fighting in a three set loss, dropping the final set 25-20. The Wolves hit .177, finishing with 22 kills and 8 errors on 79 attempts. The back row was solid, holding Underwood to a .198 kill efficiency. They forced the Eagles into 12 hitting errors.

Megan Williams finished the night with a team high 8 kills with Abby Wanser adding 6 kills. Ella Richards led their 6-2 with 8 assists to go with 7 digs and a pair of aces. Karlee Arp added 6 assists, 7 digs and had 4 kills. Grace Carroll paced the back row with 10 digs with Eryn Ramsey chipping in 9 digs and Anna Stangl adding 8 digs.

The Wolves fall to 2-6 overall and 0-3 in the Western Iowa Conference. They play in the Carroll Tournament on Saturday.

Glidden-Ralston responded nicely, flowing a close loss to CAM earlier in the week with a dominant performance at West Harrison. The most points the Wildcats gave up in a set was 10. Glidden-Ralston cruised to a 3-0 win over West Harrison, winning 25-10, 25-8, and 25-10. 

The Wildcats totaled 12 aces as a team, as they were great from the service line. Glidden-Ralston was also active at the nets defensively and on offense, as they totaled five blocks as a team and 18 kills. Individually, Ashlynn Tigges led the way for the Wildcats as she tallied nine kills on the night. Kassidy Wenck led the team in blocks with two. Addy Boell continues her hot start to the season as the setter. She dished out 15 assists against West Harrison. 

The win improves Glidden-Ralstons record to 7-1 and 1-1 in the Rolling Valley Conference. The Wildcats are back in action on Saturday at the ACGC invite.

East Sac County picked up a blowout win at home over a struggling Storm Lake St. Mary’s team. The Raiders got better as the night went on. The most points they gave up in a set was 11, and it came in the first. ESC picked up a 25-11 set one win and then went on cruise control, picking up a 25-7 victory in set two and then a 25-8 win in set three to beat Storm Lake St. Mary’s 3-0.

The Raiders were active at the nets, picking up 30 team kills in the match. ESC also did a good job passing the ball, as they totaled 28 assists as a team. Kenna Meyer and Kate Vondrak led the way offensively for the Raiders, recording eight kills. Vondrak also led the team in assists with 11. ESC also recorded three aces on the night.

East Sac County completed a sweep over two Twin Lakes Conference opponents with a 3-0 victory over Manson NW Webster at home. The Raiders won the first two sets by a combined score of 50-22. ESC won the first set over Manson NW Webster 25-12 and the second set 25-10. The third set was much closer than the first two, but the Raiders came away with a 25-19 victory to win the match 3-0. 

The Raiders were aggressive at the Nets again, picking up 32 team kills. They also recorded 31 assists. Kate Vondrak tallied a team-high 11 kills and 16 assists. With the win, ESC improved their record to 17-6 and 6-0 in the Twin Lakes Conference.
