Kuemper picked up a huge win to end their non-district schedule, knocking off 3rd ranked AHSTW in overtime. The Knights offense only put up 226-yards but they didn’t need anymore as the defense held AHSTW to 248-yards, with only 135-yards coming on the ground. The defense pitched a shutout in the 2nd half and overtime, stopping the Vikings on 4th down inside the 5-yard line to end the game.
Both teams scored in the 1st quarter, using special teams to set up short fields. Michael Kasperbauer set up the Knights score and Brock Badding hit Ben Gerken for a 17-yard touchdown with 3:21 left, tying the game at 7. The game stayed that way until the middle of the 2nd quarter when the Viking picked up a crucial 4th down and 17. The 19-yard gain gave them the mometum and Luke Sternberg scored 2-plays later from 3-yards and AHSTW led 14-7. The Kuemper offense struggled in the 1st half, gaining on 53-yards and AHSTW was able to rack up 140-yards to lead 14-7.
Kuemper needed a jolt and got it in the 3rd when Brock Badding found Michael Kasperbauer for a 66-yard touchdown with 7:52 left. Kuemper faced a 3rd and 5 and Badding went deep to Kasperbauer who made a nice play, catching it off a tip from a defensive back. The score tied the game at 14. Both defenses settled in after that and the game was remained tied heading into the Knights final drive of regulation. Kuemper got themselves in position to win it with a field goal in the closing seconds but AHSTW got pressure up the middle and got a piece of the kick, sending the game to overtime.
Kuemper got the ball first in overtime, scoring on a touchdown pass to Ben Gerken. The extra point made it 21-14 Knights as the Vikings took got their overtime possession. AHSTW faced a 4th from around the 5-yard line but the Knights moved up front, moving the ball ahead a couple yards to the 2-yard line. The Vikings tried to run the ball but the Kuemper defense held firm, holding them, ending the game with a 21-14 win.
Brock Badding passed for 174-yards, connecting on 14-18 throws. Michael Kasperbauer had one catch for a 66-yard touchdown. Ben Gerken caught 4 passing, scoring twice. The defense was terrific, led by Kent Sanders with 14 tackles, Carson Kanne with 12.5 tackles and Kyle Sundrup with 9 tackles.
The Knights sit 1-2, heading into district play on Friday at Roland Story on KIKD 106.7.
