Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Five Area Teams Played Saturday in Tournaments

Volleyball Results Saturday, August 26th 

Kuemper and South Central Calhoun At Humboldt Tournament 

The Knights bounced back after a tough start to the tournament to finish 5-1. Kuemper dropped a pair of heartbreakers to South Hardin to open the tournament, losing both sets 22-20. Kuemper had 18 kills on 18 assists, hitting a .224 efficiency in the loss. They were out-served 88% to 85% and 6 aces to 1. Kuemper didn’t let the tight loss impact the rest of their day, rolling through the rest of the competition, going 10-0 in the other sets to finish 10-2 in sets. Their closest match the rest of the tournament was against South Central Calhoun. They topped the Titans 21-13, 21-18. Kuemper held Spirit Lake, Humboldt and Fort Dodge to single digits in one set, each match and beat Grand View Christian 21-11 in both sets. 

South Central Calhoun went 3-3 with wins over Spirit Lake, Grand View Christian and Humboldt and losses against Kuemper, Fort Dodge and South Hardin. They played Kuemper well in the 2nd set and challenged South Hardin who ended up winning the tournament. The Titans cruised through the match with Humboldt, winning the 2nd set 21-7. They rolled past Spirit Lake in set 1, winning 21-6, but dropped set 2, 21-10 before winning the 3rd set 15-11. The Titans also fell to Fort Dodge, losing in 3 sets after winning the 1st set, 21-18. They dropped the next two sets, 21-13 and 15-12. 

Frannie Glynn led a balanced attack at the net with 31 kills, Kaci Peter added 29 kills, Aubrey Heuton had 21 kills and Lauren Boell and Brianna Wittrock both finished with 18 kills. Wittrock had a strong day, adding 20 digs, 10 aces and 8 blocks. Karsyn Overmohle had a team high 57 assists with Elsa Tiefenthaler adding 50 assists. Tiefenthaler finished with 9 aces and Frannie Glynn added 7 aces. Kaylie Simons led the back row with 40 digs, Brooke Rohe added 11 digs. Glynn was second on the team with 4 blocks. 

Brenna McAlister and Jayci Graeve led the Titans attack at the net with McAlister pacing them with 48 kills and Graeve finishing with 29 kills. Hayden Berquist added 10 kills. Norah Riedesel ended her day with 76 assists while adding 3 aces. Graeve and Alexa Holm paced a balanced back row with 27 digs each while Macie Dorman had 24 digs, Brenna McAlister had 19 digs and Norah Riedesel added 13 digs. Dorman led a nice service day for the Titans with 6 aces, Brenna McAlister had 5 aces and Morgan McChesney and Hayden Berquist all had 3 aces. 

The Knights improved to 6-3 on the season while the Titans sit at 3-4. Kuemper played at Boone on Monday, sweeping Boone and Greene County while the Titans will host Greene County and Panorama on Tuesday.

Carroll and East Sac At Harlan Tournament 

East Sac rebounded from two early losses to win their final three matches to win the Silver Bracket. The Raiders played well in a 1st set loss to Glenwood, losing 24-22, which seemed to spark a run. They dropped the 2nd set to the Rams, 21-14, but used the momentum to knockoff Underwood 2-0 advancing into the silver bracket as a 3rd place team in Pool B. A tough loss in set 1 against Missouri Valley didn’t slow them down as the fought hard to win set 2, 27-25, then picked up a 15-12 win in the final set to advance into the silver bracket finals against Underwood. They squared off against the Eagles for the second time on the day, winning the  match 2-0, 21-18 and 21-11. 

Carroll won their opening match over Missouri Valley, winning 2-1 by edging the Big Red in the 3rd set, 15-13. The Tigers finished 1-2 in Pool A, with losses to Treynor and Harlan, both 2-0. The 2nd set against Treynor was a tight, losing 22-20. Carroll had to make a change during pool play after suffering an injury in the loss to Treynor. Carroll played well against Harlan, falling in both sets 21-16, dropping them into the silver bracket. They opened the silver bracket against Underwood, falling 2-1, winning set 2, 21-14. The final set went down to the wire with the Eagles edging the Tigers 15-13. 

East Sac had three players with 20 more kills, led by Addisen Ehler with 27, Kate Vondrak with 22 and Kenna Meyer adding 20. Sidney Bieret and Kate Vondrak had a good day setting the ball. Bieret had a team high 38 assists with Vondrak adding 35. Jen Aschinger was strong in the back row, digging a team high 32 balls. Kenna Meyer added 15 digs, Kate Vondark had 14 and Addisen Ehler 13 digs. Vondrak led the defense at the net with 9 blocks, Ehler added 6 blocks and Kamryn Ross had 5 blocks. Sarah Bontrager had a team high 6 aces, Jen Aschinger 5 aces and Kenna Meyer and Sidney Bieret each had 3 aces. 

Olivia Rowedder had a strong day, leading Carroll with 29 kills, while adding 15 digs, 3 aces and 3 blocks. Amanda Wardell added 12 kills and Mollie Feld finished with 9 kills. Riley Nagl ended her day with 47 assists, along with 15 digs and a pair of aces. Averi Burke led a balanced back row with 29 digs while Marasyn Wittrock finished with 26 digs. Emma Kuhlmann paced the defense at the net with 4 blocks. 

The Raiders are 5-2 heading to Coon Rapids Bayard on Tuesday for a triangular against the Crusaders and IKM-Manning. The first two matches of the night will be broadcast on 93.7 KKRL. Carroll opens the season 1-3 and will head to Gilbert on Tuesday on KIKD 106.7.

Coon Rapids Bayard At Colfax Mingo Tournament 

Coon Rapids Bayard had strong showing on Saturday, going 2-1 in matches and 4-2 in sets. They were close to going undefeated, falling only to Colfax Mingo, losing both sets 21-17. The toughest match was a tight win over Nodaway Valley, edging the Wolverines 22-20 in set 1, then winning 21-14 in set 2. Baxter played them well in set 1, but the Crusaders cruised in set 2, winning 21-6. Lydia Hofbauer and Malia Clayburg came up big in the win over Nodaway Valley. 

Malia Clayburg had team highs with 10 kills and 22 digs. Anna Hart added 8 kills and 17 digs while tying with Mya Downing with a team high 2 aces each. Lydia Hofbauer finished with 6 kills, 7 assists and 5 blocks. Mya Downing added 7 assists and 14 digs while Ella Heithoff led the team with 9 assists to go with 12 digs. Aubrey Hofbauer had 11 digs. 

The Crusaders are 3-2 and will host East Sac and IKM-Manning on Tuesday with the first-two matches broadcast on 93.7 KKRL.
