Carson Maston and Cael Ortman both pitched gems and the defenses were outstanding as St Mary’s used a pair of doubles over a three-batter stretch in the 2nd inning to score the only run of the game. Landon Waldschmitt doubled to score Collin Homan and St Mary’s advances to the State Championship game on Friday. Cael Ortman made it hold up on the mound, allowing 5 hits and no runs while striking out 9 and walking 2. Conner Maston matched him most of the game, taking the loss, allowing 5 hits and 1 earned run with 6 strikeouts in 6 innings.
Lynnville Sully threatened right away getting an infield single from Lannon Montgomery and a base hit to right field by Carson Maston. Cael Ortman battles back for St Mary’s inducing a fly out to right field and a strikeout to end the top 1st. Conner Maston looked sharp on the mound early for Lynnville Sully, striking out 2 batters in the bottom 1st, getting St Mary’s in order. Cael Ortman found his rhythm in the top 2nd inning, getting Lynnville Sully in order with a ground out, line out and strikeout. St Mary’s offense came alive in the bottom 2nd. Collin Homan doubled to left-center and scored on a 1-out double by Landon Waldschmitt. St Mary’s stranded 2 in the 2nd but led 1-0. Cael Ortman cruised through the top 3rd with a pair of strikeouts. Lynnville Sully got a runner at 1st base due to an error but was thrown out at 2nd base. Caleb Rae makes a nice diving catch on a line drive from Jaxson Bunkers to start the bottom 3rd. Alex Schroeder beats out an infield single. He is forced out at 2nd base for the 2nd out and St Mary’s doesn’t score bottom 3rd and still leads 1-0. Conner Maston gets his second single of the game, leading off the top 4th. He advances to 2nd base on a passed ball and takes 3rd on a sac bunt from Bryce Richards. Alex Schroeder makes an outstanding play at 2nd base for St Mary’s to strand Maston at 3rd. St Mary’s remains up 1-0 going into the bottom 4th. Hunter Pick singles but Lynnville Sully turns a 5-6-3 double play. Through 4 innings, St Mary’s hold a 1-0 lead.
Lucas Sieck reached on a 2-out error in the top 5th for Lynnville Sully. The Hawks strand 2 in the top 5th as Ortman induces a ground out to the shortstop for a fielder’s choice to end the inning. St Mary’s leads 1-0. Conner Maston gets St Mary’s in order in the bottom 5th, still St Mary’s 1-0. Jaxson Bunkers makes a nice diving stop and throw to get Conner Maston to start the top 6th. Bryce Richards walked, Caleb Rae singles, they advanced to 3rd and 2nd on a ground out. Ortman gets a strike out to get out of the jam as Lynnville Sully has left 4 on base in the 5th and 6th innings combined. Cael Ortman singles to right field off the 1st baseman on a ball down the line with 1 out bottom 6th. Carson Maston struck out the next two batters and we go to the 7th with St Mary’s up 1-0. Corder Noun Harder gets on with a 2-out single in the top 7th, off the diving glove of 2nd baseman Alex Schroeder. Noun Harder moves to 3rd on a ball to the backstop but Cael Ortman gets a strikeout to end the game. St Mary’s advances with a 1-0 win.
Collin Homan had a double and a run scored, and Landon Waldschmitt finished with a double and an RBI for St Mary’s, Remsen. Alex Schroeder, Cael Ortman and Hunter Pick all added base hits.
Conner Maston had a pair of hits for Lynnville Sully, Caleb Rea, Corder Noun Harder and Lannon Montgomery added a base hit each.
St Mary’s heads to the championship game with a 31-2 record while Lynnville Sully ends the season 29-2.
