West Lyon holds on to beat Van Buren in a game with plenty of big situations as they jumped ahead 6-0, then had to hold on for a tight win.
Van Buren had a chance to score in the top of the 1st after a 1-out double by Jackson Manning. Korey McKenney got out of trouble for West Lyon with a shallow fly ball and a strikeout to end the inning. West Lyon got on the board in the bottom 1st with some help from Van Buren. Evan Faber walked and moved to 2nd on a single by Carter Ver Meer. Ryer Crichton hit a ball to the right side, and it was misplayed. He was safe at 1st but Van Buren had a play at the plate, but the ball was dropped on the tag and Faber scored. West Lyon left two runners on base but led 1-0. Van Buren nearly answered in the top 2nd with a Dominic Meierotto single and a walk to Dylan Richardson but a pop-up to the catcher and strikeout got West Lyon out of the inning. West Lyon added to their lead in the bottom 2nd. Gage Blauwet singled and scored on a single to left field by Evan Faber. Spencer Ver Meer who was hit-by-pitched scored on a single to right field by Carter Ver Meer. They added another on a Van Buren error with 2-outs on a ground ball to shortstop. They left the bases loaded with a chance to blow the game open but did bat nine batters in the inning. Van Buren loaded the bases with nobody out top 3rd but Evan Faber caught a line drive at 3rd and stepped on the bag for a double play and West Lyon worked out of the jam with no runs scoring. West Lyon added a pair of runs in the bottom 3rd. Gage Blauwet and Spencer Ver Meer walked and scored on a double by Evan Faber. West Lyon led 6-0 after 3 innings. Dylan Richardson sparked Van Buren in the top of the 4th with a double that scored Domini Meierotto. Van Buren loaded the bases and Lucas Fett hit into a fielder’s choice, scoring Richardson from 3rd. They add a pair of runs on two wild pitches. Taylor Sprouse knocks in a run on a ground out to shortstop and Van Buren pulls within 6-5. West Lyon doesn’t score in the bottom 4th.
Van Buren strands 1-runner on base top 5th and have left 6-runners on base through the 5 innings. Gage Blauwet opened the bottom 5th for West Lyon with a shot to right-center and West Lyon put runners on 1st and 3rd after a sac bunt attempt from Spencer Ver Meer and Van Buren tried to get the runner out at 3rd. Lucas Fett came in to pitch and shut down West Lyon. Both teams are scoreless in the 6th. Izaak Loeffler reaches on a 2-base error with 2 outs top 7th. Carter Ver Meer makes a diving stop on a ball up the middle and gets the runner by inches at 1st base to end the game. West Lyon wins 6-5 and will play in the semifinals against Beckman Catholic on Thursday.
Evan Faber finished with 2 hits, including a double, driving in 3-runs and scoring once. Carter Ver Meer had 2 hits and Gage Blauwet doubled as part of 2 hits and scored twice for West Lyon.
Jackson Manning had a pair of hits with a double and scored a run. Dyaln Richardson doubled, driving in a run and scoring a run.
West Lyon improves to 25-2 and will play Beckman Catholic in the semifinals on Thursday. Van Buren ends the season at 26-4.
