Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Beckman Catholic Comes Back To Win In Extra Innings

Beckman Catholic, the number one seed in Class 2A, and Pella Christian, the number eight seed, opened day two of the Iowa Highs School State Baseball Tournament in Carroll. In the top of the first inning, Pella Christian got a runner third but could not score, and they left two runners on base in the inning. In the home half, Beckman Catholic also left a man on base, and we went to the second tied 0-0. In the bottom of the second, Beckman Catholic was able to load the bases on three walks but did not score, and in the top of the third, Pella Christain went in order as we went to the home half of the third scoreless. Through the first three innings, Beckman Catholic left five runners on base. Beckman Catholic pitching was on a roll at the start of the game as they sent nine straight Pella Christian batters back to the dugout. Beckman Catholic scored the game’s first run in the bottom of the fourth inning off one or two hits. Two walks in the inning loaded the bases. Pella Christian responds with four runs in the top of the fifth inning on five hits to take a 4-1 lead over Beckman Catholic. In the home half of the fifth inning, Beckman Catholic made it a one-run game by scoring two runs on a couple of hits and tailed 4-3 going to the sixth. In the bottom of the sixth, Beckman Catholic was able to load the bases with no outs but a play at the plate, a strike out, and a fly out to left field ended the inning, and Pella Christian took a 4-3 lead going to the seventh.

Beckman Catholic tied the game up in the bottom of the seventh to send the game to extra innings tied 4-4. Beckman Catholic recorded two hits in the inning. In the top of the eighth innings, Pella Christian was able to pick up a couple of hits, but a play at the plate ended the inning tied 4-4. Beckman Catholic came to bat in the bottom of the eight. They loaded the bases with no outs. The nine-hole hitter came to the plate and grounded a ball to the Pella Christain third baseman and went an out at home for the second out. The Cather for Pella Christian attempted to throw the runner out at home but sailed it high, and the error brought in the game’s winning run. Beckman Catholic would be Pella Christain 5-4 in eight innings of play.
