Merchants Rally in Extra Innings After Losing Lead Late

Carroll nearly let a the slip away late, giving up 5-runs in the 7th inning and a run in the 8th inning but St Joe couldn’t close the deal as the Merchants rally in the 9th to send the game into extra innings. A 3-run bottom 11th helped the Merchants stay right in the thick of the playoff race, knocking off the 2nd place Mustangs 10-9.

St Joe scored first, taking a 1-0 lead on an wild pitch with the bases loaded in the 3rd inning. The Merchants got out of trouble with a strikeout. They responded in the bottom 3rd with a 2-out single by Michael Alt. Chris Hege and Bryce Yosko walked to load the bases and Ethan Cole singled, scoring Alt and Hege. Michael Alt, who had a great game at the plate, added to the lead in the 4th inning, singling to score Blake Tigges from 3rd base. They held the 3-1 lead into the 7th inning with the Mustangs stranding a runner at 2nd in the 6th as the only baserunner for either team. St Joe got to the Merchants bullpen in the 7th, scoring 5-runs on a pair of hits, including a 3-run home run. St Joe benefited from a walk and a pair of hit-by-pitches. The Mustangs extended their lead with a run in the 8th, going up 7-3. Carroll stranded a pair of runners on base in the 8th but responded in the 9th. Lane Spieker walked and stole 2nd base. Michael Alt walked and Spieker moved to 3rd on a wild pitch. Chris Hege walked to lead the bases and Bryce Yosko was hit-by-pitch. A balk scored a second run, then Ethan Cole grounded out scoring a run. A Cullen McBrige single scored Yosko, tying the game at 7. Carroll stranded a pair or runners, sending the game into extra innings. Neither team scored in the 10th inning. St Joe scored a pair of runs in the 9th, going up 9-7. The Merchants rally started with a double by Ethan Cole, scoring Chris Hege who started on 2nd base. Joshua Koskie tied the game with a double, scoring Cole. Koskie scored on a Blake Tigges single to end the game.

Michael Alt went 5-5, scoring twice and driving in a run. Chris Hege scored 3 runs. Ethan Cole had a double, part of 2 hits, driving in 4 runs. Joshua Koskie had a pair of hits, including a double, driving in a run. Austin Noel got the win, going 2 innings, allowing 2 hits and 1 earned run with 2 strikeouts.

The win moves Carroll to 16-18 overall and 16-18 in the conference. They trail Chillicothe by 2 games for 3rd place with the Mudcats 17-15 in the conference. Carroll hosts Chillicothe for a doubleheader on Thursday on the CB Sports Network YouTube Channel. The Merchants have 10 games remaining in the regular season.
