Kuemper pulled away in the 3rd quarter, using great defensive intensity and rebounding to take control of their District game with Greene County. The Rams kept things close in the 1st half, winning the rebounding battle, but that changed early in the 3rd and Kuemper locked down defensively, holding the Rams to 7-points on their way to a 23-point lead. The Knights opened the 3rd with a 15-2 run.
The game was tight early with a couple ties and 2 lead changes in the first 12-points. Dawson Gifford put Kuemper ahead 2-0 but the Rams scored the next 4-points to lead 4-2. Michael Kasperbauer had a good scoring 1st half with 7-points scored to tie the game at 4. Carson Kanne put Kuemper ahead 6-4, but the Rams tied the game at 6. A Kasperbauer three put the Knights ahead for good as he scored back-to-back, giving Kuemper a 11-6 lead. The Rams pulled within 1 but Kuemper went on a 7-0 run with Tregan Beiter leading a charge off the bench. Beiter hit a three, then scored inside, pushing the lead to 6. Ben Gerken made it a 8-point lead and the Knights led 21-13 at the end of the 1st quarter after a three by Brock Badding. DJ Vonnahme scored to start the 2nd quarter and Carson Kanne hit a pair of free throws, putting Kuemper up 25-13. The lead grew to 12 again on a bucket by Dawson Gifford. Greene County pulled within 29-22 but Tregan Beiter and Dawson Gifford scored, extending the lead to 11. They lead sat at 35-26 heading into the halftime break. The Knights second group of five played well defensively, sparking the Knights in the 1st half but Greene County stayed in the game on the boards.
A 15-2 run by Kuemper to start the 2nd half put the game out of reach. DJ Vonnahme started the run with a basket, Evan Adams scored inside and Carson Kanne pushed the lead to 43-28. Brock Badding made it 45-28 and Dawson Gifford gave Kuemper a 20-point lead. Taye Vonnahme knocked down a long jumper, then moments later hit a three and Kuemper was up 56-29. Both teams were able to empty the benches in the 4th quarter as the Knights moved on to the District Final on Tuesday against OA-BCIG. The game will be played in Sac City on KCIM.
Dawson Gifford led four guys in double figures with 13 points, Tregan Beiter and Michael Kasperbauer each added 11 points and Brock Badding had 10 points. Evan Adams had a team high 7 rebounds while Ben Gerken, Carson Kanne, DJ Vonnahme and Dawson Gifford all pulled down 5 rebounds. Gifford led the team with 6 assists.
The Knights improved to 16-6.

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders gave it all they got and ended up with a big road win over Ankeny Christian Academy Saturday afternoon.
The Crusaders were fighting for another district final appearance and they started out with the momentum against the Eagles. The Crusaders got off to a 12-4 lead in the first quarter and didn’t let Ankeny Christian get any sort of offense going. After the first quarter, the Eagles gained some ground back, but Coon Rapids Bayard held on to an 18-10 lead. The Eagles tried to keep chipping away at the Crusader lead, but Coon Rapids Bayard was not letting up. The Crusaders led with 6:08 left in the second quarter at 20-15 and later 24-15 with 3:14 left to go in the first half. Cal Heydon put on another stellar performance that helped the Crusaders keep their lead in the first half at 31-26 at halftime. Everytime that the Crusaders tried to pull away, the Eagles had a response and kept the game close. Wyatt Oswald got a bucket right before the shot clock went off in their offensive possession to keep the Crusaders ahead.
In the second half, the Eagles finally were able to match the intensity of the Crusaders and tied the game at 33 points apiece with 5:52 left in the third quarter. Heydon again came up clutch for his team and went on a 4-0 run to keep the Crusaders ahead 39-35. At the end of the third quarter, the Eagles got a put back shot at the buzzer to get within three points of the Crusaders lead at 45-42. The game was once again tied in the fourth quarter at 45 points with 5:11 remaining in regulation. Coon Rapids Bayard again was able to pull ahead when Heydon went to the charity stripe to complete an and-one to get the Crusaders ahead again at 55-51. With one minute left, the Eagles still had some fight left when they got within three points again at 56-53 with that score staying with 25 seconds remaining in the game. In the end, the Crusaders were able to hold off the offensive attack from the Eagles for a 59-54 win on the road in the district semifinals 59-54.
Heydon finished with 29 points and five steals for the Crusaders while Lance Clayburg had himself a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds along with six steals to lead the team. The Crusaders improve to 14-9 overall on the season. They will compete on Tuesday, February 21 for a district title when they take on ACGC at Herbert Hoover High School in Des Moines.
