Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Area Girls Basketball Teams Play Well, But Finish 3-6 on Tuesday

Carroll had three really good defensive quarters and hung tough with the 12th ranked Huskies. They held them to 4 points in the 1st quarter and 21 points in the 2nd half. Winterset struck gold in the 2nd quarter though, getting four-three pointers from a player that hadn’t made four all season. The Huskies outscored Carroll 21-9 in the 2nd quarter and led 25-15 at half. Carroll led 6-4 at the end of the 1st quarter and played within 21-20 in the 2nd half.

Shayne Aschinger had a strong game for the Tigers with 10 points and 6 rebounds. Shay Sinnard added 6 points and 6 rebounds and Katelyn Aden added 7 points. Camryn Schable, Madison Tunning and Ava Gross all had 3 steals.

The loss drops Carroll to 6-8 overall and 4-5 in the Raccoon River Conference. Carroll host #15 Harlan on Thursday.

The game went back and forth early with Glidden Ralston grabbing a lead at the end of the 1st quarter. The Wildcats maintained a lead around 8-112 most of  the game but the Rockets kept fighting, pulling within 8 with around 2:30 left in the 4th quarter. Glidden Ralston scored the final 8 points to open things up. The Rockets had outscored the Wildcats 9-8 up to that point in the 4th quarter.

Emma Stream hit a jumper to put Paton Churdan up 2-0 to start the game. Paige Klocke answered with a three for Glidden Ralston, then Stream knocked down a 3, putting Paton Churdan back up 5-3. Glidden Ralston tied it at 5 and took the lead for good at 6-5 on a free throw by Paige Klocke. Klocke and Tiela Janssen were huge for Glidden Ralston in the 1st quarter while Emma Stream and Becca Anderson kept the Rockets close. Klocke scored 6 points and Janssen added 2 as the Wildcats extended their 1st quarter lead to 13-5. Emma Stream cut it to 13-7 but Klocke and Janssen each added points, making it 16-7. Ava Minnehan scored on a nice shot off the block and Becca Anderson added a driving layup, pulling Paton Churdan within 16-11. Paige Klocke and Tiela Janssen helped the Wildcats go up 20-11 at the end of the 1st quarter. Janssen extended it to 22-11, then Janssen scored again after a Becca Anderson bucket, putting Glidden Ralston up 24-13. Becca Anderson and Emma Stream, rallied the Rockets again, pulling them within 24-17 but Paige Klocke put the Wildcats back up 26-17. The Wildcats went up by double digits, leading 31-20 on a bucket by Klocke but Becca Anderson scored to make it 31-22 at half.

Brileigh Bock did a nice job attacking the rim in the 3rd quarter, keeping Glidden Ralston’s lead around double digits. Bock’s second basket of the half made it 35-25. Tiela Janssen increased the lead to 40-27 with a 5-0 run. Glidden Ralston maintained the lead around 10-12 points into the 4th quarter. Emma Stream was fouled shooting a three to end the 3rd quarter and hit a pair of free throws, making it 43-33 heading to the 4th. Paige Klocke put the Wildcats up 12 but Paton Churdan got back-to-back baskets from Becca Anderson, pulling them within 8. Paige Klocke and Kassidy Wenck put the Wildcats back up 51-37. Their largest lead of the game to that point. Emma Stream drained a three, making it 51-40 and Becca Anderson pulled the Rockets within 9. Glidden Ralston ended the game with a 8-0 run to win going away.

Paige Klocke was outstanding all game for Glidden Ralston with 28 points and 19 rebounds. Tiela Janssen added 18 points and 6 steals. Elizabeth Lloyd did a nice job at the free throw line with the high-low and finished with 4 assists. Vanessa Koehler added 6 rebounds and Kassidy Wenck scored 7 points to go with 6 rebounds.

Emma Stream came up big for Paton Churdan with 21 points, 7 rebounds, 3 assists and 3 steals. Becca Anderson added 14 points, 6 rebounds and 4 steals. Ava Minnehan added 5 rebounds.

The Wildcats improved to 10-7 overall and 8-4 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They host West Harrison on Friday. Paton Churdan slips to 1-16 overall and 1-12 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They host Woodbine on Friday.

South Central Calhoun got rolling in the 2nd half, pulling away from West Bend Mallard. After leading 36-30 at half, they outscored the Wolverines 25-9 in the 3rd quarter. It took a half for the Titans to find their defensive rhythm after a tough-physical game on Monday night. The Wolverines did well on the offensive glass with 12 rebounds in the 1st half. The Titans took that away in the 2nd half. The improved defense and rebounding in the 2nd half allowed the Titans to pull away.

Riley Batta and Kylee Schleisman continue to put their names in the Titans record books. Batta scored 31 points and pulled down 15 rebounds, tying the career record for the school. Schleisman had 27 points and 11 assists, tying the school career assists record. Bre Patterson added 6 rebounds.

The win improves South Central Calhoun 12-3 overall and 6-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They head to Newell Fonda on Friday with a chance to get back into the conference championship hunt.

Coon Rapids Bayard played another strong game but came up short in the 2nd half against conference leader Exira-EHK. The game was tied at 20 at half and stayed tight late into the 3rd quarter. The Spartans knocked down three-three’s in the final few minutes of the 3rd quarter to lead 40-25 heading to the 4th. Coon Rapids Bayard handled the Spartans pressure well but the few turnovers they had allowed the Spartans to get on their run late in the 3rd. Crusader point guard Anna Hart picked up a 4th foul early in the 3rd and didn’t play much in the 3rd quarter.

Malia Clayburg had a team high 12 points to go with 7 rebounds and 4 steals. Breeley Clayburg added 11 points and 8 rebounds along with 4 steals. Lydia Hofbauer added 6 rebounds and 3 steals and Anna Hart and Aubrey Hofbauer both had 4 assists.

The loss drops the Crusaders to 9-6 overall and 6-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They host Ar-We-Va on Friday.

East Sac fought back in the 3rd quarter, after trailing by as many as 16, they cut the deficit to 4 but the Cougars pulled away down the  stretch, wining by 11. The Raiders played good defense in the 1st quarter but scored just 4-points to trail by 3. Things got away in the 2nd quarter, allowing 23 points, falling behind 30-17 at half. The Cougars came out quick in the 3rd but East Sac fought back, pulling within 4 before running out of steam.

Mary Bontrager had a team high 17 points along with 6 rebounds. Makenna Steiger had 14 points. Kendall Quirk had 6 rebounds and Jen Aschinger added 5 rebounds.

The loss drops the Raiders to 4-12 overall and 2-6 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They travel to Sioux Central on Friday.

The game slipped away from the Wolves in the middle quarters. IKM-Manning outscored the Falcons 26-17 in the 1st and 4th quarters combined but were outscored 29-9 in the 2nd and 3rd quarters combined. The Wolves scored 6 points in the 2nd quarter, but trailed only 20-17 at half. The Falcons poured in 14-points while holding the Wolves to 3 in the 3rd. IKM-Manning shot 25.7% from the field, going 8-24 from inside the arc, but 1-11 from three. They did a nice job at the free throw line, hitting 16-20.

Morgan Hanson continues her solid season with a double-double. She scored 10 points and pulled down 11 rebounds. Abby Nielheisel added 8 points and 6 rebounds to go with 3 steals. Taylor Beckendorf added 3 steals and Mabel Langel pulled down 6 rebounds to go with 4 steals.

IKM-Manning falls to 5-11 overall. They head to Treynor on Friday.

Audubon nabbed their second win of the season, controlling the 2nd half to win by 13 at home. The Wheelers defense was outstanding, holding the Bulldogs to single digits three of the four quarters, giving up just 1o in the 1st quarter. Audubon led 19-17 at half but scored 26 points in the 2nd half, allowing just 15.

Audrey Jensen had a team high 14 points, Sienna Albertsen added 10 points, Madison Steckler finished with 8 points and Kade Sporrer pitched in 6 points.

The Wheelers improved to 2-15 overall and 2-10 in the Western Iowa Conference. They head to Underwood on Friday.

Ar-We-Va fell to 6th ranked Woodbine on Tuesday, trailing by 13 at half and hanging close until the 4th quarter when the Tigers put 26 points on the board. Samantha Hinners had 4 points and half and Delaney Schurke knocked down a three in the 1st half as the Rockets trailed 28-15. Ar-We-Va struggled to find consistency on the offensive end scoring in single digits in all four quarters. They trailed 42-22 heading to the final stanza.

Samantha Hinners paced the Rockets offense with 11 points. Maggie Ragaller added 9 points and Kora Obrecht scored 5 points.

The loss drops Ar-We-Va to 5-9 overall and 4-8 in the Rolling Valley Conference. They head to Coon Rapids Bayard on Friday.
