Carroll at Winterset

Carroll 65

Winterset 52

The Carroll Tigers got back to .500 on the season as they were in a battle late against Winterset Tuesday night.

In a tale of two stories, Winterset was trying to add to their three-game win streak, while Carroll was trying to snap their four-game losing streak. The first quarter both teams were evenly matched as they were tied at 12-12. Bryce Berlau started off his big game with a pair of three pointers to start off to lead the Tigers with six points. Jack White then started to fire up in the second quarter and got the Tigers ahead at 25-20. White ended up with one more point than Berlau to lead Carroll with nine points in the first half.

Carroll finally got everything to click to start the second half as they extended their lead to 42-26, outscoring the Huskies 17-6. Trey Hunter got cooking with a pair of three pointers that sparked the Tiger run. Winterset wasn’t done quite yet as they rose to the challenge and played well in the fourth quarter. After going on a 14-0 run, the Huskies cut down the 16-point Tiger lead all the way down to just six at 49-43. While the threat of being outdone in the final minutes was imminent, the Tigers stayed focused and were able to pull away late with a 13-point, 65-52 win.

Berlau, Hunter, White, and Evan Hammer all had double digit points in this game with Hunter and Hammer leading the team with 14 points each. Hammer also led the team with eight rebounds, six assists, five steals, and five blocks. The Tigers with this win improved to 7-7 overall on the season and 5-6 in the Raccoon River Conference. Carroll is at home on Friday, January 27th when they host Ballard.

East Sac at Manson NW Webster

East Sac 51

Manson NW Webster 46

The East Sac Raiders were able to keep their current winning streak alive as they used a huge fourth quarter performance to get past Manson NW Webster.

Both teams had winning streaks on the line with Manson NW Webster winning three straight defeating Cherokee Washington, Storm Lake St. Mary’s and SE Valley while East Sac went back-to-back defeating Alta-Aurelia and Woodbury Central. Neither the Raiders nor Cougars had a big first quarter, but Manson NW Webster was able to get up 8-4 heading into the second quarter. East Sac started to come alive and started to inch further and further away from the Cougars. Aden Vondrak led the charge with two big three-pointers and helped East Sac put up 16 points in the second quarter and grab the lead at 20-14. East Sac Head Coach Todd Bontrager said his team’s defense and rebounds was the reason they were able to get the lead at halftime.

The Raiders kept their momentum up to start the second half and outscored the Cougars 17-10, leading 37-24. Vondrak nailed another three three-pointers in the quarter to keep his solid night rolling. Manson NW Webster were finally able to find their spark in the fourth quarter and cut down the Raiders’ lead significantly. The Raiders had to work for their third straight win, and after a late game comeback by the Cougars, East Sac was able to stay ahead and won it 51-46. Coach Bontrager says this game really showed his guys’ toughness for the first time this year for four whole quarters. His coaches staff challenged them, and the guys rose up to the challenge.

Vondrak ended up leading the team with 16 points, six assists, and four steals. Luke Wright ended up with a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The win improves East Sac to 6-8 overall on the season and 3-5 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They will travel on Friday, January 27th to take on conference leader Sioux Central.

West Bend Mallard at South Central Calhoun

South Central Calhoun 79

West Bend Mallard 55

The South Central Calhoun Titans were able to snap a rough two game losing streak as they toppled West Bend Mallard Tuesday night.

The Titans had a bit of a rough patch the last two games, losing to conference leader Sioux Central and Emmetsburg, who’s fighting their way up the conference. The Titans put those games behind them and started off with a big first quarter against the Wolverines. They’d put down 24 points and leave West Bend Mallard with 10 entering the second quarter. The Wolverines had a bigger performance in the second quarter, but they couldn’t slow down the Titans. Tyler Lightner has been a big-time player for the Titans in the last few games, and again he rose to the challenge. South Central Calhoun had 17 points and kept their lead strong at 41-24 at halftime.

Both teams scored the exact same points in the third quarter as they did in the second, which kept the Titans ahead of the Wolverines by a score of 58-38. Despite having a 20-point advantage, the Titans were still firing on all cylinders as they put up an additional 21 points in the final eight minutes to counter the Wolverines’ 17 points in the fourth quarter. After the dust settled, the Titans were victorious by a score of 79-55 to snap their two-game losing streak.

Lightner ended up leading the Titans with 22 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Eli Wheelock had similar success with 17 points on the board and four rebounds. The win elevates the Titans to 11-3 overall on the season and 6-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They are on the road on Friday, January 27th for a pivotal conference game against Newell Fonda.

Woodbine at Ar-We-Va

Ar-We-Va 60

Woodbine 53

The Ar-We-Va Rockets were able to have a competitive late game go their way as they got past Woodbine Tuesday night.

Fans had plenty of excitement in Monday’s game against Ridge View, and they got another entertaining game. Ar-We-Va used a strong start to get off to a 9-0 scoring run before Woodbine was able to score at the 2:50 mark of the first quarter. The Tigers were able to swing the momentum and tie the game at 9-9 with 1:33 left and came up with a 14-12 lead. Both teams found themselves in foul trouble in the first half with Ar-We-Va being called on 10 and Woodbine called for eight. Despite that, the Tigers continued to ride the momentum to an 18-11 second quarter and led 32-23 at halftime. Wyatt Ragaller, Wade Ragaller, and Emmett Neumann would end up having three big performances that were crucial for the Rockets in the second half.

The Tigers kept attacking in the third quarter and at one point, led the Rockets 46-36. Ar-We-Va started to climb out of their deficit with a 5-0 scoring run to end the third quarter and be down 46-41. For a majority of the fourth quarter, it was back-and-forth with Ar-We-Va finally able to take back the lead at 54-53 with 1:20 left to play. After that, the Rockets nailed six straight free throws to eventually give them the 60-53 win.

Wyatt Ragaller was a big reason for the Rockets success in this game, leading the team with 17 points. Exira-EHK 56

Coon Rapids Bayard 50

The Coon Rapids Bayard Crusaders were able to cut down a big deficit late in their game against Exira-EHK, but they would ultimately fall short.

The Crusaders were trying to snap their three-game losing streak with a win against a team that defeated them by 42 points earlier in the season. They didn’t get off to the start they wanted as the Spartans got up 16-7 after the first quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard started to climb back in the second quarter but were still outscored by two points at 14-12 and trailed 30-19. Cal Heydon had a monster night for the Crusaders, easily having one of his best scoring outings of the season.

The Crusaders continued to cut down the Spartan lead with a solid 16-11 third quarter behind Heydon, but still found themselves down 41-35. At one point in the fourth quarter, Coon Rapids Bayard was within four points of taking the lead late, but the Spartans had just enough gas in the tank to hold out. Exira-EHK pulls away to win 56-50.

IKM-Manning at OABCIG

OABCIG 55

IKM-Manning 47

The IKM-Manning Wolves put a crack in what seemed to be an impenetrable shield of OABCIG in their close loss to the Falcons.

The Western Valley leaders were 13-0 entering this game and the Wolves were looking to avenge their loss to Underwood on Monday. OABCIG came out with some fire in the first quarter, and after they led 7-5 midway through the quarter, they finished with a 15-2 run that got them up 22-7 over IKM-Manning. The climb back from that deficit started in the second quarter for the Wolves as they cut that 15-point Falcon lead down to 10 at 25-15 midway through the quarter. OABCIG had another scoring run at 8-0 to get them up 33-15 and eventually they took a 35-19 lead into halftime. Ross Kusel and Caden Keller both led the charge for the Wolves as they’d both put-up double-digit points against a tough Falcons’ squad.

OABCIG continued to keep their momentum rolling as they scored the first five of seven points in the third quarter to lead 40-21. IKM-Manning went on a tear of their own and were again down by 10 points at 46-36 entering the fourth quarter. They eventually cut down that lead further to 53-47 with 20 short seconds left. The Wolves had to force fouls late and while the Falcons missed one of their free throws, they were able to grab the rebound with eight seconds left. They dribbled out the last moments of the game and came away with a 55-47 win over IKM-Manning.

Kusel ended up leading the team with 14 points and Keller added 13. Ben Ramsey led the team with six assists. The loss dropped the Wolves to 9-7 overall on the season. They are back in action on Friday, January 27th when they travel to take on Treynor.

Riverside at Audubon

Riverside 60

Audubon 40

The Audubon Wheelers had glimmers of solid playing against Riverside Tuesday night, but they were unable to put it all together.

Both Audubon and Riverside have been through a tough season with Audubon picking up their latest win on Monday against Boyer Valley. The Bulldogs came out with a head of steam in the first quarter as they’d quickly get ahead 15-6. The Wheelers got back into their groove in the second quarter and were able to match the Bulldogs with 14 points. They still trailed by a large deficit of 29-20. Edward Miller has been a solid scorer for the Wheelers and again he had a big game with 19 points, leading the Wheelers.

In the second half, the Bulldogs had another big surge of scoring to start off, putting up 21 points. While Audubon was able to once again match the scoring in the fourth quarter, it was too late as the Bulldogs came away with the 60-40 win. The loss drops the Wheelers to 5-12 overall on the season and 3-10 in the Western Iowa Conference.
