What a show Carroll High and Kuemper put on Tuesday night at Kuemper. The game featured 14 lead changes and 10 ties along with the teams combining for 22 made 3’s. A late shot in regulation to put the Knights up by 3 from Carson Kanne and a last second 3 from Andres Cruz of Carroll High to send the game to overtime. The Tigers controlled the extra period and start the season 1-0 while Kuemper starts the season 0-1, having felt like they had a game slip through their finger tips.

Kuemper held a 51-48 lead heading into the 4th quarter, after Tregan Beiter scored to put them ahead by 4, 51-47 but Jack White knocked down a free throw before the end of the 3rd to cut the Tigers deficit to 51-48. Evan Hammer took over for the Tigers early in the 4th quarter, scoring 4-points to put Carroll up 52-51. Dawson Gifford hit one of his 3-3’s and the Knights were back up by 2. Bryce Berlau put Carroll back up by 2 at 56-54 with one of this 3-3’s. Tregan Beiter tied the game at 56 as the game seesawed back and forth. Tanner Gotto scored for Carroll, but Michael Kasperbauer answered for Kuemper, tying the game at 58. Dawson Gifford put Kuemper back up but Gotto tied it again at 60. Kasperbauer again scored to put Kuemper up 2 but Evan Hammer scored 4 in a row for Carroll High and the Tigers led 64-62. A DJ Vonnahme basket tied the game at 64. That is when things got crazy. Carson Kanne drained a 3 from the left baseline and Kuemper went up 67-64 with under a minute left. Carroll High had time to try and tie it. Head Coach Randy Bissen called a timeout to set up a play for Bryce Berlau, who is the Tigers best three point shooter. Carroll had 18 seconds to try and tie the game. Kuemper defense took Berlau away and he couldn’t get the shot off. He found Andres Cruz open on the wing. Cruz said he had glanced at the clock just before the pass and knew he had to shoot. He caught it in rhythm on the left win and drained a shot just before the buzzer and the game headed to overtime, tied at 67. Carroll High used the momentum to start the overtime quickly. After an Evan Adams free throw, Bryce Berlau put Carroll ahead for good with a 3, followed by a three from Tanner Gotto. A Evan Hammer basket pushed the lead to 75-68. DJ Vonnahme dunked it on the dribble drive and Kuemper pulled within 75-70. Andres Cruz added a free throw for Carroll, followed by baskets from Tanner Gotto and Trey Hunter. Carroll led 80-70 in the closing minute and went on to win 84-71.

The Tigers led most of the 1st quarter, with the game tying at 3 and 10. Carroll led 14-10 after the 1st quarter but Kuemper stormed back in the 2nd quarter and Tregan Beiter hit a 3 just before the halftime buzzer and Kuemper led 31-29 at half. That was their second led of the game to that point. Carroll tied the game early in the 3rd at 31 but Kuemper got hot from beyond the arc. The Knights had out shot the Tigers 12-6 from three with 2:13 left in regulation but the small lineup Kuemper used to get open looks, struggled on the defensive end and Carroll High kept in striking distance by scoring inside with Tanner Gotto and Evan Hammer who was huge in the 2nd half. Both teams had chances but struggled from the free throw line, missing chances to build upon leads. Carroll shot 11-22 while the Knights were 6-17. Carroll closed the gap on made 3’s in the overtime with Kuemper finishing with 13, but only one over the final 6:13 of the game. The Tigers hit 3 during that stretch, finishing with 9 for the game.

Tanner Gotto paced a balanced Carroll attack with 24 points along with 5 rebounds. Evan Hammer scored all 16 of his points in the 2nd half and overtime. He added 5 boards. Trey Hunter had a solid all-around game with 15 points, 5 rebounds and 6 assists. Andres Cruz finished with 9 points.
