Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper Girls Grab Only Lead of the Game Late in Win over Carroll on Tuesday

Kuemper made enough plays down the stretch to rally from down 13 at half and win a tight game on Tuesday at home. The Knights got a three from Catherine Mayhall late in the 4th quarter, giving them their first lead of the game at 42-41. Else Tiefenthaler stepped to the free throw line and pushed the lead to 2 with just over 20 seconds remaining. Carroll High had a couple chances in the closing seconds but had gone cold in the 2nd half and came up short on a pair of three point attempts. The win opens the season for the Knights, starting them at 1-0 while Carroll High falls to 1-1.

Neither team scored much most of the game with Carroll High up 6-2 after the 1st quarter. The defenses played well with Kuemper Catholic finishing with 13 steals and Carroll High with 10 unofficially. The Knights defense helped them claw back into the game holding Carroll High to 16 points in the 2nd half while the Knights offense scored 17 in the 4th quarter alone. Carroll High led 37-30 early in the 4th quarter when Kuemper Catholic began to close the gap. Aubrey Heuton scored to pull the Knights within 37-33, but Ava Gross scored for the Tigers, pushing the lead to 39-33. Kuemper rattled off 6 straight with Elsa Tiefenthaler scoring on a nifty drive, then Kaci Peter knocked down a bucket off a steal. Tiefenthaler stepped to the free throw line with her team down 2 and calmly hit a pair of free throws to tie the game for the first time. Katelyn Aden  had a nice drive and pass to Camryn Schable for Carroll High and the Tigers were back up 41-39. Catherine Mayhall gave Kuemper Catholic their first lead, hitting a three off the left side, putting them up 42-41. Tiefenthaler then added a free throw. Carroll had 2 chances in the closing seconds but couldn’t get the shot to fall and Kuemper held on for the win.

The Tigers looked really good on defense early, holding Kuemper to 12 points in the 1st half, leading 25-12 at half. They held a 13-point led twice in the 1st half, having used a flurry early in the 2nd quarter to lead 15-4. That lead came off an 8-0 run. The Knights outscored the Tigers 14-5 in the 3rd to get back into the game.

Catherine Mayhall led two Knights in double figures with 18 points along with 4 steals and 3 rebounds. Elsa Tiefenthaler added 10 points with several clutch baskets and free throws late. Tiefenthaler added 4 rebounds. Frannie Glynn had a team high 5 rebounds and Lauren Boell pulled down 4 rebounds and did a nice job getting backside rebounds on the offensive end.

Carroll High got 13 points from Camryn Schable who added 4 rebounds. Katelyn Aden had 7 points for the Tigers along with 10 rebounds and 3 assists. Ava Gross continues to play very well off the bench, scoring 6 points but grabbing 8 rebounds. Madison Tunning led the Tigers with 3 steals.

Kuemper heads to Saydel to play Grand View Christian on Thursday then goes to Denison Schleswig on Saturday. Carroll hosts Gilbert on Friday.
