Kuemper at Treynor
Kuemper 42
Treynor 7
The Kuemper Knights continue to look sharp this season as they kept their undefeated streak alive by getting past Treynor Friday night.
The first quarter was dominated by both defenses where we saw two interceptions and a fumble recovery. Kuemper started out with the football in the first quarter and while pushing the ball down the field, the Cardinals were able to intercept DJ Vonnahme in the endzone and get the ball at the 20-yard line. Kuemper’s defense came up with an interception of their own to give the Knights the ball back at the one-yard line. A short scoring play for Kuemper ended up with a fumble recovery for Treynor at the three-yard line to give the Cardinals the ball back for the second time in the first quarter. After three punts, the Knights were finally able to get a touchdown drive toward the end of the quarter when DJ Vonnahme found Benjamin Gerken on a 33-yard pass to lead 7-0.
In the second quarter, John Boes was able to intercept the Cardinals on the 35-yard line for a pick six to give Kuemper the 14-0 lead. That sparked the entire Kuemper team and to end the quarter, Logan Sibenaller broke off for a 66-yard run to give Trevor Rial the opportunity to run in an 18-yard touchdown and extend Kuemper’s lead to 21-0. Treynor’s offense was lacking their quarterback Kayden Dirks and the Kuemper defense was able to win the battle in the trenches with Logan Sibenaller playing well with 6.5 total tackles and Chris Mohr getting four total tackles, a sack, and 1.5 tackles for loss.
To start off the second half, Rial was able to keep his momentum going with a 16-yard touchdown run in the third quarter, increasing the Kuemper lead to 28-0. The Knights’ offense had another touchdown drive in the third quarter that started from their own 39-yard line. After getting down to the one-yard line, DJ Vonnahme kept the ball himself and drove in for the one-yard touchdown to keep the Knights ahead 35-0. The Knights’ defense wasn’t done making plays, Mohr was able to recover a fumble on the ensuing Treynor offensive drive to give the ball back to Kuemper. On the Knights next offensive drive, Taye Vonnahme got the sixth touchdown on the night with a 26-yard run up the middle. Treynor’s lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter when Karson Elwood ran in a long 66-yard touchdown, but it came with only 2:10 left in the contest. Kuemper brought home a 42-7 win.
The Knights are now 7-0 overall on the season and 4-0 in Class 1A District 8. They now set up a district title match with Underwood Friday night.
