The Carroll Tigers’ rushing scheme was met by a wall of Gilbert Tigers Friday as Carroll was unable to pick up a win.
Gilbert and Carroll took the first few drives to size each other up as they both went three and out to start off the game. Carroll was able to strike first in the first quarter when Jack White found an open Evan Hammer in the corner of the end zone for a touchdown to lead 7-0. Carroll’s running game was stopped in its tracks against Gilbert defense, who stacked four to five players in the back field and had a stout defensive line. Gilbert’s first score of the game came in the second quarter when Conner Rash intercepted Carroll at their own 32-yard line, setting up a 47-yard trudge to the end zone. Will Hawthorne found Jonathan Stoker in the end zone to tie up the ball game on a drawn-up trick play.
In the second half, Gilbert’s defense kept Carroll away from scoring. Gilbert was able to score twice more in the third quarter, a 25-yard pass from Owen Kautman to Carson Ragaller, and a 10-yard rushing touchdown from Owen Wirth, to lead 21-7. In the fourth quarter, Carroll was able to cut down the Gilbert lead when White found Payton Wardell in the corner of the end zone to trail by one score at 21-14. White had a solid performance in this game throwing the ball, going 11 for 21 for 136 passing yards and two touchdowns. Gilbert put the final exclamation point on their win with a four play 49-yard drive to win 27-14.
The loss drops the Carroll Tigers to 1-1 overall on the season. Carroll Coach Craig Rowedder commented on this game saying he likes the improvements he’s seen from his guys, but he’s now focused on getting his guys ready for next week.
