Ar-We-Va at St Edmond
St Edmond 65
Ar-We-Va 19
The Ar-We-Va Rockets opened up the 2022 season with a tough matchup with St Edmond Friday night. The Gaels brought back plenty of firepower on both sides of the ball while the Rockets are looking to rebuild with large freshman and sophomore classes.
St Edmond wasted little time in the first quarter getting on the board, putting up 37 points while leaving Ar-We-Va with none. The Gaels continued their scoring fest with 14 second quarter points and entered halftime with a 51-0 lead over the Rockets. Ar-We-Va Co-Head Coach Isaac Schaefer says with the large number of freshmen playing in this game, it was a shock to the system playing at the varsity level week one, but that’s to be expected and that they’ll get better as the season progresses.
Ar-We-Va did see bright spots in this game; Freshman Devon Ehlers had a solid outing defensively with six total tackles, Freshman Wyatt Ragaller had seven receptions for 130 yards and touchdown, Sophomore Wade Ragaller brought in two rushing touchdowns, and Sophomore Blayne Smith at the quarterback position went 14 for 26 for 181 passing yards. The Rockets held their own a lot better in the second half, putting up 13 points in the third quarter and six in the fourth, while St Edmond had a lone 14 points in the entire second half. Schaefer says defensively they had two freshmen in the back field and they let some plays get past them, but as the game progressed, he continued to see improvement from his players. Ar-We-Va ultimately fell 65-19 to St Edmond. They are on the road again on Friday, September 2nd when they take on Kingsley Pierson.
