The New London Tigers wasted little time in Tuesday’s Class 1A Semifinal as they swiftly defeated the Newman Catholic Knights.
New London started in the top of the first inning batting, and they quickly got two runners across home plate. Joshua Catala got home off an error by the Newman Catholic defense and Cater Allen got an RBI single to score Dereck Santiago. Newman Catholic was unable to get any runners on base, giving New London another chance at the plate. The Tigers were unstoppable in the second inning as they got a game high nine runners home. Tucker Gibbar and Allen hit back-to-back two RBI doubles that led the way for New London to get up 11-0 after two innings. Kooper Schulte, Ryan Richey, Brenden Richey, and Catala were all credited with RBIs with Schulte being credited with two.
Newman Catholic’s offense was still unable to figure out how to get past Seth Bailey and the New London defense. Bailey, in four innings of work, was able to record four strikeouts while allowing four hits and one earned run. That run for Newman Catholic came in the third inning when they were able to load up the bases and get Matthew Henrich home. New London also scored in the third inning, getting Gibbar and Allen home with Allen and Bailey credited with RBIs. The Tigers kept the pressure on in the fourth inning with another three runs scored to get up 16-1. The Knights in the bottom half of the fourth got Nash Holmgaard to second, but after a line drive to the shortstop, a 6-3 putout, and a flyout to right field, the Tigers were victorious by a score of 16-1 in four innings.
Newman Catholic’s season will come to an end with a final record of 32-4. New London will match up with Remsen St. Mary’s in the Class 1A championship game on Friday at noon.
