Carroll Merchants Drop Fourth Straight with Loss to Clarinda Tuesday

The Carroll Merchants were able to outhit the Clarinda As in Tuesday’s home game at Merchant’s Park but were unable to outrun them in the end.

The As got two runners home early in the top of the first off an error by the Merchants. After that error, Clarinda flied out to left field and scored another runner off that sacrifice hit to get up 2-0 over the Merchants. It was a stalemate from that point on with both offenses not getting much going. Morgan Smith got the start for the Merchants on the hill and had a solid night, only allowing six hits and three earned runs while recording five strikeouts. In the sixth inning, the Merchants were finally able to get Michael Alt home when Jordan Matthewson singled to left field. Parker Ingram was waiting at third to score but didn’t get the opportunity to.

Up 2-1, Clarinda got their bats going with two more runs scored in the eighth inning. An RBI single scored one runner and a tag out at second allowed another Clarinda runner to score, giving them the 4-1 advantage. The Merchants in the bottom half of the eighth got Alt to second base off a wild pitch and later to third when Kaleb Freeman hit a single to center field, but a grounder turned into a double play and a missed opportunity to score for Carroll. After Clarinda went three up and three down in the ninth, Carroll’s ninth inning came and went with three strikeouts to give the As the win by a final score of 4-1.

As a team, Carroll outhit the As 10-6, but left seven batters on base. The loss dropped the Merchants to 16-16 overall on the season and is now their fourth straight loss.
