The Merchants rallied down 5-0 in the bottom 1st to take a 8-6 lead into the bottom 9th with a pair of runs in the 8th and an insurance run in the 9th. It wasn’t enough as Clarinda scored 3-runs in a 1/3 of an inning in the bottom 9th to end the game with a 9-8 win. The loss drops the Merchants to 16-15 and their lead over Des Moines for 3rd place in the North Division is 1/2 game. The Merchants have dropped three straight after winning five in a row. They host Clarinda on Tuesday.
Clarinda scored 5-runs in the 1st inning on 3 hits and a Merchant error. The big Saunders and Barksdale both had 2 RBI with Saunders singling and Barksdale doubling. The Merchants responded in the 3rd innings, Andrew Schroeder singled to center field, then Michael Alt singled but Schroeder was out at 2nd base. Parker Ingram walked and Kaleb Freeman singled to center, setting it up for Jordan Matthewson who singled to left field, scoring Parker Ingram and Michael Alt. Andrew Schroeder walked to start the 5th inning, Michael Alt singled to left field, Parker Ingram singled to left field, scoring Schroeder, who scored on the throw. Kaleb Freeman ground out to 3rd, scoring Alt, Jordan Matthewson hit a sac fly to center field, scoring Ingram, tying the game at 5. Clarinda took the lead back in the 7th on a single by Sands, scoring Kelton. Carroll answered in the 8th, taking their first lead of the game. Jordan Matthewson began the inning with a single to right-center. Danny Schweitzer singled to left field. Brent Hokeness singled to right-center, scoring both Schweitzer and Matthewson and Carroll led 7-6. In the top of the 9th, Andrew Schroeder was hit-by-pitch, then stole 2nd base. Kaleb Freeman singled to right field, scoring Schroeder and putting the Merchants up 8-6. Barksdale walked and Sands singled, driving in a run. The walk came with the bases loaded, scoring Kelton to ty the game. Sans scored on an error to end the game.
The Merchants finished with 13 hits, out hitting the A’s by 3. Andrew Schroeder, Michael Alt, Kaleb Freeman, Jordan Matthewson and Danny Schweitzer all had 2 hits. Matthewson and Brent Hokeness finished with 2 RBI each and Schroeder, Alt and Parker Ingram all scored twice.
