Denison Schleswig at Kuemper

9 Innings

Kuemper                     5

Denison Schleswig    4

Kuemper was taken to the limit on Thursday as they took on Denison Schleswig in a nine inning instant classic. The Monarchs got their offense off to a solid start in the first inning, bringing home two runners to lead 2-0. Kuemper had a solid response by getting a run scored to cut the Monarch lead in half at 2-1. Both offenses struggled to manufacture any runs for three full innings, until Denison Schleswig came back in the fifth with a two-run inning, leading 4-1. Kamryn Venner for the Knights went the full nine innings in the circle and had a phenomenal night with 12 strikeouts while giving up only six hits, four earned runs, and a single walk. The Knight’s offense also got back on track with their biggest inning yet, three runs in the bottom half of the fifth inning. Melinda Schaefer, Jordan Schwabe, and Kezie Schon all recorded RBIs while Alexis Diercksen had an overall solid night going 2-3 with two runs scored and a double.

Another three innings came and went with nothing added to the scoreboard. In the ninth inning, Denison Schleswig was once again stopped by Venner and the Kuemper defense, giving the Knight’s a chance to win it. Diercksen led off in the ninth with a single and she got her way to second thanks to a sac bunt by Kamryn Venner, and to third thanks to a wild pitch. The bases were loaded up thanks to Kaci Peter reaching on a defensive indifference call and an intentional walk to Hailey Ostrander. The winning run was scored by Diercksen thanks to Schwabe being walked, giving the Knights the 5-4 win.

Kuemper improves to 7-9 overall on the season and have now won four straight. They are back to the ballpark on Friday, June 10th as they take on Red Oak on the road in a doubleheader.
