Kuemper at South Hamilton
Kuemper 62
South Hamilton 57
The Kuemper Knights’ final game of the regular season was hot and cold all night against South Hamilton, but they were able to close out the game with a win Thursday night.
The Knights got their offense off to a solid enough start in the first quarter with a 17-point output. Isaac Evans and Dennis Vonnahme were both good offensive forces for Kuemper as they both combined to put 27 points on the board. The good start for Kuemper turned sour in the second quarter as the Knights went a bit cold from the field. Knights Head Coach Sean Minnehan says them, and South Hamilton traded scoring runs all night long, with Kuemper starting out hot, then struggling to score. The biggest struggle came from the free throw line as the Knights only made nine of their 23 shots. The Hawks took advantage of the Knights poor shooting to put up 20 points in the third and tie the game at 33 points at halftime.
The Knights got back to their hot shooting in the second half by going on a 12-0 run in the third quarter. The Hawks had little answers for Kuemper’s response on both sides of the court and gave up a potential lead as Kuemper led 50-43 going into the fourth quarter. Once more, the Knights started to falter a bit shooting in the fourth quarter, but South Hamilton was not as potent as they were in the second quarter. Kuemper’s defense was led by Dawson Gifford who led the team with five steals while Vonnahme aided the offense with five assists. The Hawks were unable to tie up the game again as the Knights held on by the skin on their teeth to win it 62-57.
The Knights close out the regular season with an overall record of 11-10 and finish 5th in the Hawkeye 10 Conference with a record of 7-5. The Knights will host their first round playoff game as they take on Eagle Grove on Monday, February 14th.

South Central Calhoun at Storm Lake
Storm Lake 81
South Central Calhoun 56
The South Central Calhoun Titans closed out the regular season with a less-than desirable outcome as they fell to Storm Lake on the road Thursday night.
The Tornadoes got their offense off to a great start, putting up 20 points while facing off against a tough Titan defense. South Central Calhoun had a solid start to their night as well, putting up 14 points, but trailing to start the second quarter at 20-14. Storm Lake’s offense continued to rattle off points and while still allowing the Titans to get double digit points. The Tornadoes tore through the Titans defense and put up 27 points to take the 47-28 lead.
Despite having little answers in the first half for the red-hot Tornadoes offense, the Titans saw the tides turn in their favor a bit in the third quarter. Their defense got some stops, keeping Storm Lake to a game low 13 points, while their offense stayed consistent and put up a game high 17 points, but still trailed 60-45. Joshua Dietrich was once again a huge offensive unit for the Titans, putting up 21 points and six rebounds. He had some major help underneath the basket from Antonio Sanders who put up 11 boards. The momentum from South Central Calhoun swung back into Storm Lake’s corner once again for another 21 points quarter in the fourth. The Tornadoes had three 20+ point quarters enroute to their eventual 81-56 win over the Titans.
As a team, the Titans shot 43% from the field and only made three of their 12 three-point attempts, but shot 56% from the charity stripe, making 13 of their 23 free throw attempts. Boyer Valley at IKM-Manning
IKM-Manning 35
Boyer Valley 34
The IKM-Manning Wolves were in a slugfest with Boyer Valley in their final regular season game as the Wolves escaped with a win Thursday night thanks to some missed three pointers from the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs were able to keep a close lead getting out of the first quarter, leading 12-9. The Wolves offensively had a few guys that kept them in the game, Cadne Keller and Kristians Upmalis. Keller worked his way this season from a solid 6th man to a starter and did a great job against Boyer Valley of attacking the basket and ended up with 11 points. Upmalis was a pleasant surprise as he came in and aided the offense well with eight points and seven rebounds, including a steal. The fast-paced nature of the IKM-Manning offense allowed them to stay conditioned well into the later parts of the game against the Bulldogs. Boyer Valley continued to keep ahead of IKM-Manning by five points going into halftime at 20-15.
The Wolves were able to stay close with the Bulldogs in the second half, starting with a 10-point performance in the third quarter. Boyer Valley’s five-point lead was only cut down to four going into the fourth quarter, now at 29-25. The IKM-Manning team truly came together in the fourth as they shut down the Boyer Valley scoring and stayed consistent with theirs. IKM-Manning grabbed the one-point lead late in the quarter, and it came down to Boyer Valley pushing the ball down court for some late game magic. The Bulldogs were unable to make a couple of long three-pointer attempts to win it, giving the Wolves the close win at 35-34.
The Wolves will improve to 6-15 overall on the season. IKM-Manning will open up their postseason with a road game against CAM Anita on Monday, February 14th.
