Boys Basketball Results for Friday, January 28th

Carroll at Ballard

Ballard 72

Carroll 65

The Carroll Tigers had a tied ball game against Ballard after the third quarter concluded, but the Bombers were able to get the better of the Tigers in the fourth quarter to pick up their 10th conference win on Friday night.

The Tigers were able to get off to a solid start in the first half with the help of Tanner Gotto getting the offense fired up. He led the Tigers with seven points in the first quarter, with help from Kaleb Booth who added five to the board as the Tigers led 22-16 going into the second quarter. The Bombers were able to get plenty of points on the board, but the Tigers kept matching them shot for shot in the second quarter, with the Tigers edging them out 18-17 and taking a 40-33 lead into halftime. Booth and Evan Hammer both led the Tigers with solid 10-point performances in the first half as Gotto added nine to give the Tigers fuel going into halftime. Those three combined to score 39 of the Tigers 40 points.

Carroll’s success continued in the early parts of the third quarter, leading by nine points, until the Bombers started their comeback. Ballard cut down that lead to a mere one point with 2:19 left to play in the quarter. The Tigers were able to delay the Bombers taking the lead by taking a 49 all tie into the fourth quarter. Ballard went 16-9 in the third quarter as the Tigers turned the ball over in that single quarter than they did in the entire first half. Ballard and Carroll traded more shots back and forth with Ballard going on a 6-0 run with 4:25 left to play. Ballard used the momentum built up from that scoring run to get up 68-63 with about a minute left to play and eventually the 72-65 victory as the Tigers were unable to slow down the Bomber’s offense late.

Booth had a massive scoring night for the Tigers, leading the team with 29 points and recording seven rebounds, six assists, and two steals. Hammer also had a solid night with 12 points, seven rebounds, a steal and a block. The Tigers will fall to 8-6 overall on the season and 7-4 in the Raccoon River Conference. Returning from the weekend break, the Tigers will be at home Tuesday, February 1st to take on Bondurant Farrar in another conference matchup.

Kuemper at Lewis Central

Lewis Central 54

Kuemper 44

The Kuemper Knights found themselves in a consistent seven-point deficit against Lewis Central Friday night as the Titans rode an early game lead to victory.

The Knights speediness matched up well with the Titans’ size as both teams showed off their skills early on. Kuemper’s shots weren’t falling well, but they rebounded well and defended well as Lewis Central went five of six from the free throw line to start the first quarter. The Titans’ forcible offense got them past the Kuemper defense a few times as they held on to a 14-9 lead going into the second half. Michael Kasperbauer drained his first of four three pointers in the first quarter and led the Knights with four first quarter points. Kuemper saw their first seven-point deficit in the second quarter as Lewis Central attacked the lane and got past the Knight’s defense more and more. While Nate Overmohle kept the Knights in the game offensively with seven first half points, the Titans took a seven-point lead into halftime at 31-24.

The Knights were able to get past that seven-point deficit in the early parts of the third quarter by cutting down the Titan lead to two points. Lewis Central wasn’t able to put many points on the board, but what they did do was get up by seven points again by the end of the third quarter at 38-31. Past the third quarter, Kuemper was unable to get past that seven-point deficit. While Kuemper put up 13 points in the fourth quarter, Lewis Central took plenty of trips to the free throw line that kept them out in front. The Titans went eight of 11 from the charity stripe in the fourth quarter alone. Those free throws were enough to give the Titans a 10 point and eventually the victory with a final score of 54-44.

Individually for the Knights, Michael Kasperbauer led the team with 13 points and recorded two rebounds, two assists, and three steals. Isaac Evans was the other Knight to get double digit points with 11 while getting a team best seven boards. The Knights will fall to 9-9 overall on the season and 6-4 in the Hawkeye Ten Conference. Kuemper returns to action next week with a non-conference road game on Tuesday, February 1st against Harlan.

Coon Rapids Bayard at Ar-We-Va

Coon Rapids Bayard 53

Ar-We-Va 48

A battle between Rolling Valley Conference opponents Coon Rapids Bayard and Ar-We-Va came down to the one-point game Friday night with three minutes left as the Crusaders were able to pull away for the victory.

Starting off this epic clash were the Crusaders who escaped the first quarter with a three-point lead of 15-12. Ar-We-Va was able to fight back a fair bit in the second quarter as they edged out Coon Rapids Bayard by two points, trailing by one point at 25-24 going into halftime. Both teams had multiple guys record double digit points, with Lance Clayburg being the clear-cut best among everyone, recording 22 points in this game.

The Crusaders were able to swing the momentum back to their side slightly in the third quarter with a 15-point performance. The Rockets kept knocking down shots as well, only being out beaten by three points and staying close to the Crusaders lead of 40-36. With three minutes left in the fourth quarter, Coon Rapids Bayard was holding on to a one-point lead as the Rockets threatened to take the lead and the momentum. Luck was on the side of the Crusaders, though, as they were brought to the charity stripe plenty of times in the closing minutes of the game and sank eight of them. Those free throws were enough to give Coon Rapids Bayard the slight edge over Ar-We-Va 53-48 in a high-octane game.

Easton Hays and Gabe Obert were the two other Crusaders who ended the game with double digit points: Hays recording 16 and Obert with 10. Braeden Kirsch and Will Ragaller had solid nights as they both got double digit points as well. Both guys recorded 12 points each with Ragaller recording six rebounds and assists as well. Cooper Kock was a solid help on both sides of the ball, recording eight points, 10 rebounds, and an assist. The Crusaders improved to 11-6 overall on the season and 7-5 in the Rolling Valley Conference as the Rockets fell to 6-11 overall and 4-9 in the conference.

The Crusaders are on the road on Tuesday, February 1st when they take on conference opponent CAM Anita. Underwood at Audubon

Audubon 56

Underwood 39

The Audubon Wheelers broke their five-game losing streak and picked up a huge conference victory as the Carson Bauer led offense defeated Underwood Friday night on their home court.

The Wheelers and Eagles spent the majority of the first quarter fighting for the lead. Audubon started with the 2-0 lead and the game was tied at two, six, and eventually nine points going into the second quarter. Audubon’s offense really started to come alive in the second quarter as they started by grabbing back the lead at 12-9. Underwood took that lead down to 12-11 and were threatening to take the lead, but that’s when the Wheelers got on the scoring run, they needed. They went 16-7 after that point and got up 28-18 at halftime. The Wheelers had plenty of scorers in this game, including Carson Bauer who ended up leading the Wheelers with 16 points in this game.

The scoring success from the first half followed the Wheelers in the second half. They’d start off the third quarter with a 5-0 run that led them to a 12-point quarter with Underwood not too far behind in scoring. The Eagles broke their silence with a bucket to get them to 20 points, and eventually had a nice scoring streak to get them nine points in the quarter. The Wheelers brought their 40-27 lead into the fourth quarter. There was no slowing down for this fiery Audubon offense as they put 16 more points on the board and kept Underwood in the rearview mirror as they cruised to a 56-39 victory. The three other Wheelers who scored in double digits in this game included Braden Wessel with a solid 12-point performances, Gavin Smith who added 11 to the total, and Jack Deist who recorded 10 points.

The Wheelers will improve to 6-12 overall on the season and 5-9 in the Western Iowa Conference. They will return from the weekend break with a conference road game on Tuesday, February 1st against LoMa.

Treynor at IKM-Manning

Treynor 65

IKM-Manning 35

The IKM-Manning Wolves showed their competitiveness and conditioning as they took on one of the top teams in the Western Iowa Conference, Treynor, Friday night at home.

The Wolves couldn’t have asked for a better start as they got ahead of the Cardinals 14-13 going into the second quarter. That strong start was soon spoiled by Treynor in the second quarter as they went off for a 19-point quarter and took over the lead at 32-22. While the points didn’t drop like they wanted to, IKM-Manning rebounded the ball well with Dalton Gross grabbing five boards and Nolan Ramsey recording four. As a team, the Wolves totaled 17 rebounds.

Trynor continued to ride their momentum from the second quarter as they had another high scoring third quarter at 17 points and extended their lead to 49-30. The Wolves didn’t have much for answers defensively for the momentum the Cardinals built up going into the fourth quarter. Trynor was able to score in the double digits once again with 16 points in the final eight minutes to get past IKM-Manning by a final score of 65-35. Amos Rasmussen led the Wolves offensively with eight points while Nolan Ramsey aided him with seven points.

The Wolves return from the weekend with a conference road game on Tuesday, February 1st against Missouri Valley. Tyler Brunner will be broadcasting that game on 93.7 KKRL around 5:50.

Newell Fonda at South Central Calhoun

Newell Fonda 68

South Central Calhoun 56

The Mustangs pulled away late to take a two-game lead on South Central Calhoun in the conference race as the Titans fell for the second time in their last three games. The game was tight through the first half with five lead changes and two ties. South Central Calhoun did a nice job pounding the ball inside, getting Joshua Dietrich established. His ability to score inside, opened things up from the outside, creating shots for Gavin Batta who knocked down a pair of threes in the 1st half. The game turned in the 3rd quarter when Newell Fonda went on a 9-2 run to close out the quarter, building a 46-38 lead heading into the final stanza.

Eli Wheelock opened the game with a strong drive to the hoop, putting the Titans up 2-0.

Gavin Batta drained a long three, putting them ahead 5-2. Tyler Lightner hit a pair of free throws and the Titans led early 9-4. Newell Fonda answered with a 6-0 run, but Batta drained a long three to put the Titans up 12-10. Batta found Dietrich inside and the Titans led 19-17 at the end of the 1st quarter. Their lead grew to six early in the 2nd quarter, when Eli Wheelock scored again. Trouble started late in the half for the Titans as Newell Fonda, down 23-17, went on a 13-0 run to lead 30-23. The Titans pulled within 2 at half.

South Central Calhoun had chances in the 2nd half, pulling within 1 at 37-36, 3 at 41-38 and 6 at 44-38 late in the 3rd but never got over the hump. Newell Fonda led 46-38 after three quarters. The lead grew to 12 early in the 4th quarter. South Central Calhoun cut it to 7, but that was as close as they would get.

Eli Wheelock led the Titans with 19 points, Joshua Dietrich finished with 17 points (13 in the 1st half) and 10 rebounds. His 4 points in the 2nd half, came in the final minute. Gavin Batta added 11 points. Joe Clark pulled down 11 rebounds.

The loss drops the Titans to 13-3 overall and 7-2 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They host SE Valley on Tuesday.

Woodbine at Paton Churdan

Woodbine 71

Paton Churdan 57

The Paton Churdan Rockets had a solid performance against a solid Woodbine team Friday night with two guys finishing in double digits for points.

The Rockets were able to hang with the Tigers in the first half as they’d only be outpaced by four points after the first quarter at 18-14. Both teams kept the pressure on offensively in the second quarter with Woodbine recording 20 points and Paton Churdan close behind them with 18 points. The Tigers held on to the lead going into halftime at 38-32. Joe Carey and Shayden Thurman, coming off solid performances against Glidden Ralston, were once again a big reason for their success against Woodbine.

That offensive success for the Rockets was halted in the third quarter as the Tigers also saw a dip in points generated. The Rockets were only able to add six points to their total as Woodbine doubled that score to extend their lead to 50-38 heading into the fourth quarter. Both offenses snapped out of their lulls in the fourth quarter and went off for their best performance of the night. The Rockets nearly had 20 points, instead settling for 19 while Woodbine was two points ahead of them with 21 points. While Paton Churdan had an outstanding night of offense, their third quarter performance was what hurt them in the end. Woodbine came away to win 71-57.

For the Rockets, Joe Carey had a team high 19 points and recorded five rebounds and four assists. Shayden Thurman was also impressive offensively with 16 points while also having four rebounds, and an assist and steal. Bradyn Smith’s night was also solid with seven points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. The Rockets return from the weekend with a conference road game on Monday, January 31st against Exira-EHK.

Sioux Central at East Sac

Sioux Central 55

East Sac 42

The East Sac Raiders were able to keep a tough Sioux Central squad contained in the first half and fought hard in the second half, but the Rebels were too much to handle in the end Friday night.

The first half for East Sac was highlighted by their strong defense and ability to score when they needed to. The Raiders found themselves down by a point at 13-12 going into the second quarter, but a hard fought second quarter changed that. The Raiders’ strong defensive attack allowed them to go down court and get crucial points on the board as they took the lead at 22-21 at halftime. Tyler Schmitt hit some big shots early in the contest that sparked the scoring for the Raiders.

Sioux Central’s scoring lulls were broken with East Sac’s struggles to get shots to go their way. East Sac Head Coach Todd Bontrager says the third quarter got a little physical between both teams as East Sac was looking to draw some fouls near the baskets, but the calls were not going their way. The Rebels came away from the third quarter up 34-30 heading into the final quarter of regulation. The scoring for Sioux Central came alive with a couple of three pointers that gave them some cushion. East Sac’s biggest struggles came from the charity stripe. They went seven of 19 from the free throw line in the game. Coach Bontrager saw the 19 free throw attempts as a positive, but not making more hurt them in the end. The Rebels had their best performance in the fourth quarter as they put up 21 points en route to their 55-42 win over East Sac.

As a team, the Raiders kept control of the ball well and only committed seven turnovers and had a solid defensive night. Schmitt had another solid night with an 18 point, 13 rebound double-double. The Raiders will fall to 8-9 overall on the season and 6-3 in the Twin Lakes Conference. They will round out their week of games with another important conference game against GTRA on Saturday, January 29th.

Glidden Ralston at West Harrison

West Harrison 61

Glidden Ralston 32

Glidden Ralston went from a slow start to putting up nearly 20 points in the second quarter against West Harrison, but the Hawkeyes showed why they are the top team in the Rolling Valley Conference getting past the Wildcats with their second half performance Friday night.

The Wildcats had a tough time against the West Harrison offense to start the game out, allowing the Hawkeyes to score 18 points and get ahead 18-7 going into the second quarter. While the start wasn’t what they wanted, Ethan Olberding and Caden Smith were the ones to dig the Wildcats out of that hole. Smith was able to sink some big three pointers while Olberding aided offensively to get the Wildcats 17 points on the board and trim down the Hawkeye lead significantly to 31-24 at halftime. Glidden Ralston Head Coach Cole Corson says his team played well offensively in the first half, and while executing well defensively, couldn’t stop the Hawkeyes entirely.

While West Harrsion had a large portion of their lead cut, they made up for that with big performance in the second half. Glidden Ralston went cold offensively with only four points to show in the third quarter, while the Hawkeyes popped off for 13 points and increased their lead to 44-28. The scoring woes for the Wildcats extended into the fourth quarter as they only put up another four points. West Harrison had another strong scoring quarter, getting past the Glidden Ralston defense for a 16-point performance and eventually the 61-32 win. Olberding led the Wildcats with 13 points and five rebounds. Smith had a solid night with four points, four rebounds, and an assist and steal.

The Wildcats return from the weekend with a road conference game on Monday, January 31st against Boyer Valley.
