Jack Badding made two huge plays late to stave off a rally by Roland Story, helping send Kuemper back to the Stat Tournament for the first time since 2023. The Knights led most of the game and went up by 13-points early in the 4th quarter, only to give up a 15-4 run that tied the game at 48 with under two minutes remaining. The Knights made a couple of stops and Jack Badding stepped into a three from the right win, giving Kuemper a 51-48 lead with under a minute remaining. He helped clinch the win with a steal on the Norseman’s next possession, setting up a free throw from Dylan Schon. Tanner Badding sealed the win with a pair of free throws with 08.8 seconds remaining. The game featured two lead changes, both coming in the first two baskets in the game and one tie. The tie was late at 48-48. Kuemper took the lead for good with a bucket from Ryan Clair. The Knights outscored the Norseman in every quarter until the 4th quarter as the offensive went stagnant. Roland Story hung around all game, falling behind by seven in the 1st quarter, nine in the 2nd quarter, eleven in the 3rd quarter and thirteen in the final stanza. Every time it looked like Kuemper was taking control, Roland Story responded, usually pulling with two to four-points.
Teddy Perkins was huge for Kuemper in the 1st quarter, drilling 3-3’s helping them build an 18-13 lead by quarter’s end. Ryan Clair had the first-three-points for Kuemper making a free throw to start the game, then scoring a bucket after Roland Story took their only lead at 2-1. Jack Badding hit a bucket and Teddy Perkins hit his first-three, putting Kuemper up 8-2. Roland Story pulled within 8-6 but Ryan Clair kept them in front with a basket on an offensive rebound. Roland Story answered and was within 10-8 when Teddy Perkins hit his second-three. Ryan Clair moved the lead to 15-8 but the Norseman scored five in a row. Teddy Perkins gave Kuemper a 18-13 lead to end the 1st quarter with a three. Griffin Glynn, playing on a bad ankle, hit a pair of free throws early in the 2nd quarter and Kuemper led 20-15. A Norseman three made it 20-18 but Griffin Glynn scored inside and Tanner Badding made it 25-18 with a three. Tanner Badding scored to make it 27-20 and Griffin Glynn had a nice bucket inside to make it 29-20. A Dylan Schon free throw ended the half with Kuemper up 30-23.
Roland Story opened the 2nd half with three in a row but Jack Badding drained a long three and Kuemper led 33-26. The lead hung around four to six-points most of the 3rd quarter until Dylan Schon went on a spurt. He scored seven straight points for Kuemper as they built a 44-33 lead to end the 3rd quarter with a 7-2 run. Teddy Perkins scored on an offensive rebound to start the 4th and Kuemper had their largest lead at 46-33. Roland Story took control as Kuemper got passive on offense, scoring twelve in a row, pulling within 46-45. Griffin Glynn broke the run with a dribble drive from the left wing, attacking the paint. Roland Story kept the momentum, scoring three in a row to tie the game at 48. Both teams had bad turnovers and missed shots at the rim, leaving the game tied. Jack Badding broke the tie with a long three from the right wing. He hustled back on defense and stole an errant pass by the Norseman. That set up a free throw from Dylan Schon making it a two possession game. The Knights got a big stop at the rim and Tanner Badding made a pair of free throws to secure the win, sending Kuemper to the State Tournament.
Jack Badding ended the game with 8-points and 4 steals, Dylan Schon had 11-points and 6 rebounds and Griffin Glynn had 8-points and 3 assists. Teddy Perkins scored 11-points, Tanner Badding added 7-points and 3 steals and Ryan Clair just missed a double-double with 9-points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 4 steals.
The Knights improved to 22-3, having won 16 in a row. They will play Union Community on Wednesday, March 11th at 10:30 in the quarterfinals on KIKD 106.7. Union Community rallied to beat Pella Christian 61-60.

Coon Rapids-Bayard fell in the Substate final at Sioux City east to Boyden-Hull on Saturday. The Crusaders battled a very tough Boyden-Hull defense and the Comets jumped up 10-6 after the first quarter. Both teams battled evenly in the second as Cal Heydon was the main focal point of the Crusaders offense and they trailed 21-17 going into the break. Boyden-Hull outmatched the Crusaders defensively as they took away a lot of what they would have gotten against a lot of teams as the Comets held a lead into the fourth. The Crusaders gave up a run to open the fourth and just could not claw back into the game as they would fall 54-40. The Crusaders end with a 23-2 record but fall short of the trip to Des Moines.
