The Audubon Wheelers and IKM-Manning Wolves baseball teams came out of the 2022 season with multiple athletes who ranked among the top of the Western Iowa Conference.
The Wheelers in 2022 finished fourth overall in the conference with a record of 9-7 and 11-12 overall. Among the Wheelers, Gavin Smith was one of the stars that shined bright. Against his conference counterparts, he finished fifth overall in batting averages with an average of .464, tied for fourth overall in doubles with eight on the season, and was tied for first in home runs with five. Smith also spent a good time on the hill this season, finishing fifth overall in strikeouts with 43, having the third most innings pitched with 39.2, and second in pitches thrown with 712. Gavin Larsen had a solid season at the plate, finishing sixth in triples with two on the season and tied for sixth in RBIs with 22.
IKM-Manning’s season in the WIC was a little tougher, finishing sixth overall with a conference record of 5-10 and an overall record of 10–14. Despite the record, they had guys that made an impact. Max Nielsen was one of those athletes that were dominant on both sides of the plate. In his senior season, Nielsen finished ninth overall in batting averages with an average of .406, seventh in slugging percentage with 0.656, and had an outstanding season on the hill. He finished fourth overall in ERA with an ERA of 1.11, second in strikeouts with 83 on the season, and had the best WHIP in the conference with a WHIP of 0.82. Treyton Barry was a great baserunner for the Wolves, finishing third overall in stolen bases with 22.
