Merchants Lose Early Lead in 6th Straight Loss

The Merchants had another game slip away late, falling to Des Moines in a game played in Boone. The loss drops the Merchants into 4th place in the division, a half game behind Des Moines.  Carroll finished with more hits 9 to 7 but also had 4 errors. Carroll scored early, going up 3-0 after 2 innings, extending the lead to 5-0 heading into the bottom of the 4th. That is when the Peak Prospects began to climb back into the game. They scored 3 times in the 4th top pull within 5-3. Carroll went back up  7-3 with a pair of runs in the 5th but Des Moines tied the game with a 4 spot in the bottom of the 5th. They grabbed the lead for good in the 6th.

Michael Alt tripled with one out for Carroll in the top of the 1st and scored on a single up the middle by Kaleb Freeman. Freeman stole 2nd base, one of his three stolen bases in the game and scored on a single to left field by Nick Baker. the Merchants had 3 hits in the inning and led 2-0. Danny Schweitzer reached on an error in the 2nd inning and stole 2nd base. Schweitzer moved to 3rd base on a balk and scored on a single by Kyle Berg. The lead was 3-0 for the Merchants heading into the 4th inning. Nick Baker singled through the right side to lead off the 4th, his second hit of the game. Kaleb Freeman reached on a fielders choice but Baker was out at 2nd base. Seth Christiansen walked with 2 outs and Kyle Berg walked to load the bases. Andrew Schroeder doubled, scoring Christiansen and Freeman and Carroll led 5-0. A walk and a double started the rally for the Peak in the bottom half of the 4th. They finished the inning, scoring 3-runs on 2 hits with a pair of Merchant errors.

The Merchants responded in the 5th inning. Kaleb Freeman doubled to left-center to begin the inning. Nick Baker was hit-by-pitch. The Merchants had a double steal with Freeman scoring on a throwing error and Baker moving to 3rd base. Garrett Freeman hit a sac fly to left field to score Baker and the Merchants scored a pair of runs to lead 7-3, heading into the bottom of the 5th. The momentum swung to Des Moines on a leadoff single and a hit-by-pitch. A walk loaded the bases for the Peak and they scored a run on a bases loaded walk, then scored 3 more runs on three wild pitches, tying the game at 7. Carroll went down in order in the top of the 6th, setting up the Peak grabbing the lead. They scored a pair of runs on 2 hits and 2 more Carroll errors. The Merchants tried to rally in the 9th inning with Andrew Schroeder doubling with one out but he was stranded on 2nd base.

Andrew Schroeder, Kaleb Freeman and Nick Baker all had 2 hits with Schroeder doubling twice and driving in a pair of runs. Freeman had a double, scored twice and drove in a run and stole 3 bases while Baker drove in a run and scored a run. Michael Alt had a triple, Kyle Berg singled, driving in a run and Danny Schweitzer scored once, Blake Neill went 4 innings, allowing 4 hits and 6 runs. Alex Johnson got the loss, going 3 2/3 innings, allowing 3 hits and 2 runs with 8 strikeouts.

The loss is the 6th straight for Carroll, dropping them to 16-18 and a half game behind the Peak for 3rd place in the division.

Carroll  host St Joseph at 6:35 on Friday while the Peak host Clarinda on Saturday.
