It was an up and down game for the Crusaders as they fall to 1-2 overall and 1-1 in the Rolling Valley Conference with a road loss. Coon Rapids Bayard fell down 12-0 but battled back to trail by 8 at the end of the 1st quarter and pulled within 25-22 late in the 1st half. Brynn Bass got on a roll in the 1st half, scoring 16 points in the 1st half. CAM Anita slowed her down in the 2nd half and was able to pull away by scoring 34 points in the 2nd half with a good number of those in the paint.

The Cougars hit two early threes in building a 12-0 lead in the 1st quarter. They looked like they would run away with the game but Coon Rapids Bayard starting breaking the press and getting into their half-court set. Brynn Bass knocked down a free throw to get the Crusaders on the board, she hit a three a few moments later and Coon Rapids Bayard got into a rhythm offensively and chipped away at the deficit. The pulled within 14-8 early in the 2nd quarter and then got a bucket from Miranda McClellan to cut it to 19-15. Every time the Crusaders pulled close CAM answered and they went back up 23-15. A Brynn Bass three made it 25-22 late in the half but CAM Anita scored the final 4 points of the half and led by 7 at half.

The Cougars extended the lead right out of the locker room, going up 11 in the first couple minutes. The lead grew to 15 but Lydia Hofbauer found Megan Gray for a three, cutting the deficit to 43-31 at the end of the 3rd. That was as close as Coon Rapids Bayard would get the rest of the game. CAM Anita held Brynn Bass scoreless most of the 2nd half, finishing with 6 points in the 4th quarter, most of those coming late. Breeley Clayburg did come on in the 2nd half with 8 points but fouled out, leaving the Crusaders small in the lane.

Brynn Bass  had a team high 22 points, Breeley Clayburg finished with 8 points and Lydia Hofbauer added 7 points. Clayburg  had a team  high 7 rebounds and Hofbauer added 5 rebounds.

The Crusaders have to rebound quickly as they head to West Harrison on Tuesday.

The South Central Calhoun Titans add another win to their perfect season with big performances from Riley Batta and Sayer Steig against Manson NW Webster Monday night.

The first quarter was all Cougars to start as they got out to a 5-0 start with the Titans getting off to a slow start. After a re-firing up of the defense, the Titans came alive and tied up the game at 7-7 by the end of the first quarter. It didn’t take long for the Titans to take over the contest in the second quarter as they’d go 17-4 overall in the quarter and take the 24-11 lead at halftime. The biggest performers for South Central Calhoun in this contest were Riley Batta and Sayer Steig; Batta ended the game with a team high 21 points, along with six rebounds, an assist and two blocks. Steig ended the game with a double-double with 17 points and 15 rebounds. Head Coach Curt Batta says the second half focus was on the defensive end of the floor and winning the rebounding battle.

The Titans in the second half started to cruise a bit as they slowed down the scoring, but held off the Cougars in the third quarter, outperforming them 9-4 and extending their lead to 33-15. Manson NW Webster had their best performance of the night in the fourth quarter where the Cougars out-scored the Titans 11-9, but it wasn’t enough to take over the lead. After a big performance from Batta and Steig, the Titans were able to extend their winning streak to 4-0 with a 42-26 win.

The Titans’ busy week continues on Tuesday, December 7th when they play host to Webster City.
