Riverside hit just enough 3’s in the 3rd to open things up on the inside down the stretch and Exira-EHK missed some opportunities in the final minutes as the Bulldogs won a battle of teams ranked to start the season. Zoey Rasmussen hit back-to-back 3’s in the 4th quarter to give the Spartans a 42-41 lead, but Riverside responded with a 7-0 run to take control. The Spartans had a chance at the line late to pull within 2-points but missed a free throw and Riverside hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.

Harlow Miller gave the Spartans the lead to start the game with a nice offensive rebound and putback. Riverside answered with a 6-0 run as both teams struggled against the other teams pressure defense and didn’t shoot the ball well in the 1st half. Jaelynn Petersen hit a free throw and Taryn Petersen had a bucket and free throw to cut the Bulldogs lead to 8-6 at the end of the 1st quarter. A Taryn Petersen 3 to start the 2nd quarter gave the Spartans a 9-8 lead as the game seesawed back and forth until Taryn Petersen gave Exira-EHK a 13-11 lead. Jaelynn Petersen scored and Taryn Petersen added another bucket and the Spartans were up 17-11 late in the half. A Bulldog 3 before half pulled Riverside within 17-14 at half.

Kadence Brannan Sporrer hit a free throw and Harlow Miller scored inside early in the 2nd half, putting Exira-EHK up 20-17 but Riverside went on 7-0 run. Taryn Petersen scored a layup and Jaelynn Petersen scored inside, keeping the Spartans within 26-24. Another 6-0 run by Riverside stretched it to 32-24 but Taryn Petersen scored four straight points to end the 3rd quarter and Exira-EHK trailed 32-28. Riverside scored the first-four points of the 4th quarter. Harlow Miller stopped the run with a basket and Jaelynn Petersen hit a pair of free throws and a bucket to pull the Spartans within 36-34. Zoey Rasmussen took over for the Spartans hitting a bucket, then a pair of 3’s back-to-back a little later and the Spartans grabbed a quick 42-41 lead. Riverside went on a 7-0 run and never allowed their lead to dip below three the rest of the game.

Taryn Petersen went over 1,000 points in her career, doing so in the 3rd quarter. She finished with 19 points and 4 steals. Jaelynn Petersen had 11 points and 3 rebounds. Harlow Miller had 6 points and 6 rebounds. Zoey Rasmussen  had 8 points and Kadence Brannan Sporrer had 4 assists and 4 steals.

The Spartans sit 0-1 and will host Ar-We-Va on Tuesday.

Ar-We-Va opened the season falling to West Monona on Monday night as the offense struggled. West Monona came out quick, scoring 22-points in the 1st quarter, then scoring in double figures in all four quarters. Gabbie Hundling had a strong showing for the Rockets, leading them with 10 points and 7 rebounds. The Ar-We-Va offense found a rhythm in the 2nd quarter, scoring 9-points to trail 38-13 at half. West Monona pushed the game to continuous clock late in the 3rd quarter as they held Ar-We-Va to 5-points in the 2nd half. Noelia Gonzalez and Annalee Wittrock both added 4-points and Hallie McCollough had 3 rebounds and a pair of steals.

The Rockets open the season 0-1 and will head to Exira-EHK on Tuesday.

Glidden Ralston battled hard at 3rd ranked Newell Fonda but the Mustangs pressure forced them to play faster than they wanted. The Mustangs took control of the game in the 1st quarter, building a 25-10 lead. The Wildcats offense was consistent most of the game with 10-points in three of the four quarters. Freshman Chloe Peters led the way with 10-points with Allison Snyder adding 9-points in the loss. Newell Fonda led 47-20 at half, then stretched the lead in the 3rd quarter, outscoring the Wildcats 17-3. Glidden Ralston had seven girls score at least 2-points with Jenna Subbert adding 5-points and Kassidy Wenck scoring 3-points.

The Wildcats open the season 0-1 and will host Woodbine on Tuesday.
