It was close early as both teams scored in the first few minutes of the game, but Audubon took control before the end of the 1st quarter, pulling away to clinch their district title. The Wheelers running game took over, rushing for 330-yards with Aiden Kjergaard and Paxton Beane both having over 100-yards. The Wheelers only passed the ball twice, with both going for touchdowns. Coon Rapids Bayard played without Caden Oswald but still had success running the ball with Ethan Bauer and found success in the air with Gavin Heiderscheit catching a pair of touchdowns.
Audubon struck first with Aiden Kjergaard running for a 13-yard touchdown. Coon Rapids Bayard responded quickly with Ethan Bauer breaking off a 62-yard touchdown run, tying the game at 8 with 10:43 left in the 1st quarter. It looked like it could be a track meet early with Aiden Kjergaard breaking off a 65-yard touchdown run on the Wheelers next possession. The touchdown on the first play of the Wheelers second drive put Audubon up 16-8 with 10:30 left in the 1st quarter. The game would change on the Crusaders next possession. Aiden Kjergaard intercepted a pass on the first play, setting the Wheelers up at the Crusaders 23-yard line. Two plays later the Wheelers capitalized with Aiden Kjergaard rushing for an 11-yard touchdown and Audubon led 24-8 with 9:33 left in the 1st quarter. It didn’t take long for Audubon to stretch the lead. The defense forced a three and out and Jorgen Nowatzke returned the punt for a touchdown, making it 32-8 midway through the 1st quarter. The Crusaders crawled back into the game with a quick touchdown on their next possession. Ethan Bauer broke off another big run, scoring from 57-yards, pulling the Crusaders within 32-16. Audubon put the game out of reach before the end of the 1st quarter with a pair of touchdowns. Mason Kasperbauer returned the kickoff to the Crusaders 10-yard line and Aiden Kjergaard scored two plays later. After a Crusaders punt, Carson Wessel scored on a 1-yard run and Audubon led 46-16 late in the 1st quarter. The lead grew in the 2nd quarter with Aiden Kjergaard finding Brody Weber for a 51-yard touchdown, Aiden Kjergaard having a 1-yard run and 5-yard touchdown run, the latter coming with 1:19 left in the half. Audubon led 68-16 at half.
Both teams scored a pair of touchdowns in the 3rd quarter with Paxton Beane scoring on a 12-yard run for Audubon. Tucker Lewis found Gavin Heiderscheit for a 65-yard touchdown for Coon Rapids Bayard. Beane added a 20-yard touchdown for Audubon and Lewis finding Heiderscheit for a 63-yard touchdown for Coon Rapids Bayard. The Wheelers wrapped up the scoring with Paxton Beane finding Hudson Hocker for an 11-yard touchdown in the 4th quarter.
Aiden Kjergaard led Audubon with 12 carries for 136-yards and 6 rushing touchdowns. He added a 51-yard touchdown pass. Paxton Beane finished with 102-yards rushing and 2 touchdowns while passing for a touchdown. Austin Christensen paced the Wheelers defense with 11 tackles, including 5 solo, 2 sacks and 2 for loss. Jorgen Nowatzke had a punt return for a touchdown.
Ethan Bauer had 186-yards rushing on 20 carries for Coon Rapids Bayard, scoring 2 touchdowns. Gavin Heiderscheit had a pair of touchdown catches, totaling 128-yards and Andrew McAlister led the defense with 9 tackles with 6 solo.
Audubon improves to 7-0 and 5-0 and will host Exira-EHK on Friday. Coon Rapids Bayard falls to 4-3 and 3-2 and will travel to Glidden Ralston on 93.7 KKRL on Friday.
