Carroll At Le Mars- Class 4A Region 4
Le Mars 9
Carroll 1 (5 Innings)
Carroll battled a long bus ride, starting the game early in the rain, a lightening delay and a really strong Le Mars team on Thursday in the opening round of Regionals. The Tigers played one of their best games of the season, finishing the year with three of their best performances. The Tigers were out of sync in the 1st inning as Le Mars scored 4-runs on three Carroll errors. After a 30 minute lightening delay Carroll looked sharp and played like the more confident and focused team. They scored a run in the top of the 2nd and held Le Mars scoreless until the 5th when they scored 5-runs to end the game, moments before the next rain storm started.
The game started about ten minutes early on Thursday to try and beat several storms that were expected to hit the area throughout the evening. Carroll went down in order in the top of the 1st and had a few miscues in the bottom of the 1st as Le Mars showed their strength at the plate. Two early errors, followed by a double and a single helped the Bulldogs grab a 4-0 lead. Kyra Hosenfelt was pitching well with only two of the runs allowed by earned. Following the 1st inning the game was paused for a 30 minute lightening delay. Carroll used the time well. Cayla Cummings battled for a 2-out walk and stole 2nd base, igniting the Tigers dugout. Audrey Huegerich hit a ground ball on the infield and the Bulldogs misplayed the ball, allowing Cummings to score from 2nd base. Carroll had runners on 2nd and 3rd when the inning ended but they had momentum down 4-1. Le Mars went down in order in the bottom of the 2nd but Carroll couldn’t take advantage. Kyra Hosenfelt reached on an error and stole 2nd base to start the 3rd but was stranded at 2nd base. Hosenfelt helped Carroll dig out of trouble in the bottom of the 3rd. Le Mars had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1-out but Hosenfelt had back-to-back strikeouts to end the threat. The Bulldogs had runners on 2nd and 3rd with 1-out in the 4th but the Tigers again got out of trouble with no runs scored. Kyla Owen doubled to lead off the top of the 4th for Carroll but they weren’t able to advance her and the game was still 4-1 going to the 5th. Tahlia Hahn singled for Carroll with 2-outs but was thrown out at 3rd base. Le Mars used that energy in the bottom of the 5th. The inning started with a double and an unlucky break for Carroll. Le Mars bunted and the ball was fielded but the throw to 1st hit the runner on the helmet and bounced down the right field line. A run scored and the Bulldogs found their rhythm. Another Tiger error on a throw to 1st allowed a second run to score, making it 6-1. A single pushed the lead to 7-1 and triple extended it to 8-1 with 2-outs. A wild pitch ended the game with Le Mars scoring from 3rd base to win 9-1.
Tahlia Hahn and Morgan Schagt both singled and Kyla Owen had a double that was driven into left-center. Cayla Cummings scored a run.
The loss ended the Tigers season at 1-27.
