State Boys Wrestling Recaps for Thursday, February 20th

Class 1A

It was a tough afternoon session for the area Class 1A wrestlers as they combined to go 0-5. Karson Wuebker of South Central Calhoun moves on to wrestle on Friday, losing to top ranked Kaiden Belinsky of Don Bosco in the quarterfinals. Wuebker wrestled well, getting in some shots but wasn’t able to capitalize and score. Belinsky built a lead early and pulled away late in the match as Wuebker was trying to score quickly and Belinsky was able to counter and score, winning by Major Decision 14-1. Ethan Bauer of Coon Rapids Bayard was the aggressor in his 2nd round consolation match. He was able to get inside and nearly had Devon Blanchard of Nashua Plainfield on his back but Blanchard rolled through and was able to defeat Bauer by Fall in 3:18. Treynor Cose of Coon Rapids Bayard struggled to get his shots, wrestling against a shorter wrestler in Cody Cox of Lake Mills, who was able to get inside on Cose. Cose got a takedown in the 3rd period but Cox regained control, earning back points and winning 10-3.

Cooper Nattress of South Central Calhoun hung tight all match against Caden Sykes of Colfax Mingo but felt he wasn’t able to be aggressive offensively. He earned an escape late in the match but wasn’t able to get more points in a 5-2 loss. Jace Pedersen of South Central Calhoun went out quickly, building a 3-0 lead. He started on the bottom in the 2nd period and Joel Cooper of Panorama was able to get an arm and roll him, finishing the match with a pin at 3:27.

Class 2A

Two area wrestlers advanced to Friday on Thursday night with Owen Klocke of Carroll earning two wins by fall in the 2nd and 3rd round consolations and Coby Pierce of Kuemper winning by major decision and decision. Leyton Elmquist of Audubon and Quinten Polking of Carroll won their 2nd round consolation matches but fell in the 3rd round consolation.

Klocke won his 2nd round consolation against Logan Dunn of Sergeant Bluff Luton by fall in 1:30, then rolled in his 3rd round consolation, beating Miken Wheeler of Anamosa by fall in 2:18. Pierce topped Ethan Erickson of Heelan by major decision, 16-2, dominating the 2nd and 3rd period. Pierce advanced in the 3rd round consolations, beating Gunner Martwick of Creston 7-1, avenging a loss from the Hawkeye 10 Conference Meet. Leyton Elmquist of Audubon earned a 6-3 win in the 2nd round consolation, beating Lucas Peters of West Delaware. He fell by major decision in the 3rd round consolations against Mitchell Williams of Crestwood Cresco. Quinten Polking of Carroll defeated Drew Wheater of East Marshall by fall in the 2nd round consolation, winning in 2:28. He battled Caysen Curran of Mount Vernon, losing 10-6 in the 3rd round consolation.

Caleb Hoffman of Kuemper, Lane Elmquist of Audubon, Owen Nepple of Kuemper, Jon Rasmussen of Audubon, Michael Rowedder of Carroll and Reid Steger of Kuemper all fell in the 2nd round consolations.
