Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Glidden Ralston Goes 2-1 At Madrid Quad

Glidden Ralston started slowly in both sets, falling down 3-0 in set one and 8-4 in set two. They grabbed their only lead of the match in set two, going up 3-2 but Pleasantville was able to retake the lead at 4-3, pushing the lead to 8-4. The Trojans were in system more and their serve forced the Wildcats, who were playing without their setter in Amelia Garrett, out system most of the match. The Wildcats battled hard in the second set, trailing 16-14 but Pleasantville closed the set on a 5-1 run.

The Wildcats answered a 3-0 run to open set one with a 4-1 run to tie the set at 4-4. Lauren Hulsing got the offense going with a kill, followed by a kill from Allison Snyder and an ace serve from Ashlynn Tigges. The set was tied two more times at 5 and 6 before the Trojans went on 7-0 run to lead 13-6. Glidden Ralston scored but Pleasantville responded with another 7-0 run to lead 20-7. Ashlynn Tigges broke the run with a kill but the Trojans took set one 21-8. Lauren Hulsing tied set two at 2 with a kill and Glidden Ralston went up 3-2 but Pleasantville went back ahead 4-3. The Trojans extended the lead to 8-4 but Kassidy Wenck had a kill and Allison Snyder added another ace serve and the Wildcats were back in the set, down 8-6. The Trojans maintained the lead between 2-3 points before stretching it to 14-10. Glidden Ralston responded with a kill from Lauren Hulsing and back-to-back aces from Allison Snyder. Pleasantville held off the Wildcats rally, building on a 16-14 lead with a 4-0 run. They closed the match out scoring five of the last seven points.

Lauren Hulsing had a team high 5 kills for the Wildcats with MaKenna Wiederien leading them with 4 assists to go with 6 digs. Ashlynn Tigges topped Glidden Ralston with 10 digs and 3 aces while Kassidy Wenck had 9 digs.

A 5-0 run to end the second set saved the Wildcats as they trailed one set to nothing and were at match point with Madrid leading 20-17. Glidden Ralston responded with five straight points as Allison Snyder’s serve took Madrid out of system and the Wildcats defense came alive, scrambling to keep plays alive and scoring on Tigers errors. Snyder served an ace, giving them their second lead of the set and third lead of the match at 21-20. They won 22-20 and used that momentum to never trail in the third set, on their way to a 15-9 win to take the match 2-1.

Madrid controlled the early part of set one, building an 8-3 lead. Allison Snyder had a kill, followed by a pair of aces, pulling the Wildcats within 10-8. Madrid remained in front until Glidden Ralston went on a 4-0 run with Ashlynn Tigges kill putting the Wildcats up 14-13. Madrid responded, going up 15-14 and they never trailed again. BreAnn Hartswigsen pulled Glidden Ralston within two at 19-17 but Madrid scored the final two points. Glidden Ralston led 1-0 in set two but fell behind 3-2. The Tigers stretched the lead to 7-3 but Glidden Ralston chipped away with Allison Snyder pulling them within 8-6 with a kill. The Wildcats hung close tying the match at 11 after a kill from Ashlynn Tigges and an ace serve from Kassidy Wenck. Madrid held off the Wildcats, pushing the lead to 18-14. The Wildcats responded with a 3-0 run but Madrid scored two in a row and lead 20-17. Glidden Ralston scored on a Madrid error and Allison Snyder went back to serve. She kept Madrid out of system and the Wildcats did a nice job scrambling to keep plays alive, forcing the Tigers to make a few more errors. Snyder served an ace to give Glidden Ralston a 21-20 lead on their way to a 22-20 win. The Wildcats built an early lead in set three, going up 2-0. Madrid tied the set at 3 but Glidden Ralston got a pair of ace serves from MaKenna Wiederien, pushing the lead to 7-3. Kassidy Wenck had a nice kill in the middle, keeping Glidden Ralston up by five late. Ashlynn Tigges ended the match with back-to-back kills, giving the Wildcats a come from behind win.

Madilyn Trost and MaKenna Wiederien both had 7 assists with Ashlynn Tigges and Allison Snyder each having 5 kills. Snyder added 10 digs and a pair of aces with Tigges finishing with 7 digs. Anna Steinkamp added 6 digs and MaKenna Wiederien added 2 aces.

Glidden Ralston finished off their night with two-three set wins. They won the opening set against Collins Maxwell, but dropped set two, sending it to a third set. Their serve took in the final set. The Wildcats served well in the all match, finishing with 15 aces, led by Ashlynn Tigges had 9 aces, Reece David added 3 aces and Olivia Squibb had a pair of aces. Ashlynn Tigges and Allison Snyder led them with 4 kills each with Kassidy Wenck adding 3 kills. MaKenna Wiederien continued to grow in her first starts at setter, finishing with 12 assists.

The pair of wins improves Glidden Ralston to 5-2 on the season as they host Boyer Valley on 93.7 KKRL on Tuesday in an important Rolling Valley Conference match.
