Brincks Exteriors Sports Report: Kuemper and South Central Calhoun Impressive on Tuesday

Kuemper was impressive in their home and Hawkeye 10 Conference opener on Tuesday. They played at a high level, forcing Creston to play at their level. The Knights kept the Panthers out of system most of the match with a strong serving night. They continued to work all their hitters with great balance. Kuemper battled through tough plays, playing to the whistle. Their defensive game helped feed into a strong night on offense.

Brianna Wittrock started hot at the net, helping them take a 2-1 lead in the first set, then Elsa Tiefenthaler had a pair of aces, pushing the lead to 5-1. The Knights pushed the lead to 7-1, extending it to 11-3 with a kill and two aces from Kolbi Peter and a kill from Alivia Schenkelberg. Creston fought back, pulling within 12-6 but Zoe Brunnig and Mariah Hueton had back-to-back kills followed by an ace from Karsyn Overmohle. An ace by Kaylie Simons extended the lead to 19-7. Kolbi Peter added a pair of kills and ended the first set with an ace, giving Kuemper a 25-14 win.

Kuemper jumped out quick in set two, taking a 7-1 with Elsa Tiefenthaler getting a kill to start the set, Kolbi Peter had a kill and Kaylie Simons added back-to-back aces. The Panthers made a run, pulling within 8-5. A Zoe Brunning kill sparked Kuemper and the Knights went up 16-8 with kills from Addy Anthofer and Kolbi Peter sandwiched around an ace from Elsa Tiefehthaler. Brianna Wittrock added a kill, followed by Mariah Heuton and Kuemper led 18-10. The Knights cruised the rest of the set, winning 25-12.

Brianna Wittrock had a pair of kills to start the third set as Kuemper went up 3-1 but Creston tied it at 4. Mariah Heuton pushed the Knights lead to 5-4 with Zoe Brunning making it 6-4. Heuton scored again, making it 7-5. The Knights slowly edged away with Kolbi Peter’s kill making it 12-7. Brianna Wittrock added a kill and the Knights were in control of the final set, closing it out with a 6-0 run to win 25-12.

Kolbi Peter had a team high 11 kills with Brianna Wittrock adding 7 Kills, Mariah Heuton with 6 Kills and Alivia Schenkelberg with 4 kills. Kaylie Simons was all over the back row, pacing the Knights with 29 digs, getting help from Brooke Rohe with 10 digs and Elsa Tiefenthaler with 10 5 digs. Tiefenthaler led the Knights with 17 assists with Karsyn Overmohle adding 14 assists. Brianna Witrrock had a strong defensive night at the net with 4 blocks with Zoe Brunning and Addy Anthofer both having 3 blocks. Kuemper had four players with 3 aces each in Elsa Tiefenthaler, Kolbi Peter, Karsyn Overmohle and Kaylie Simons.

The Knights are 3-0 on the season and head to the Humboldt Tournament on Saturday.

The Titans used an aggressive serve to keep the Raptors out of system most of the match, helping them earn a sweep in their season opener. They ended the match with 12 aces and very few errors with Brenna McAlister using her tough serve to finish with a team high 6 aces and Brooklyn Pruitt adding 3 aces. The back row had a strong night, allowing their front row to have good looks at the net. Alexa Holm paced the back row with 9 digs with Jayci Graeve adding 8 digs, Brenna McAlister 7 digs and Norah Riedesel and Macie Dorman both finishing with 5 digs. Riedesel dished out 31 assists, feeding Brenna McAlister and Jayci Graeve for 11 kills each. Sadie Wheelock added 6 kills and Riedesel and Blair Schleisman both had 3 kills.

The Titans start the season 1-0 and will head to the Humboldt Tournament on Saturday.
