The season came to an end for the Carroll Merchants on Tuesday, falling to St Joseph, the top seed in the league in the MINK League semifinals. The Mustangs scored in six of the eight innings they batted, building a 8-3 lead after six innings. The Merchants led briefly in the top of the 3rd, scoring a pair of run to lead 3-2. St Joseph responded in the bottom half with 2-runs and never trailed again, adding a run in both the 4th and 5th innings and two more in the 6th.
The Mustangs took the early lead, collecting four hits, scoring 3-runs in the bottom of the 1st. The Merchants got out of trouble with two Mustangs still on-base. Carroll responded in the 2nd inning, scoring a run, but missing an opportunity to score more. Justin Ricketts was hit-by-pitch as Carroll loaded the bases with no hits in the inning. Dylan Shepherd, Nolan Oliver and Aiden Cizek all walked before Ricketts was hit-by-pitch, scoring Shepherd. A Sammy Harris triple ignited the Merchants in the 3rd inning. His hit to right field scored Noah Dutler, who had been hit-by-pitch. Cullen McBridge flew out to right field to score Harris and the Merchants led 3-2.
St Joseph grabbed the lead back for good with a base hit and a fielder’s choice, taking a 4-3 lead. They added a run on two hits in the 4th and scored again in the 5th inning. The Merchants bats went cold in the middle of the game, stranding a runner in the 4th, but having no runners in the 5th and 6th. The Mustangs blew the game open with a pair of hits, scoring two runs to lead 6-3 after six innings. Carroll stranded a runner in the 7th and 8th but went down in order in the 9th.
Sammy Harris had a triple, drove in a run and scored for the Merchants. Justin Ricketts had a base hit and an RBI and Jake McClure and Aiden Cizek both had a base hit in the game.
Carroll ends the season 19-26 overall.
