State Wrestling Results for Audubon and Carroll on Thursday, February 15th

Carroll had three wrestlers advance to the 4th round consolations on Friday morning after the Tigers had a strong 2nd round consolation to begin Thursday morning. Audubon season ended with Lane Elmquist falling in the 2nd round consolations.

Lane Elmquist of Audubon began the morning session for local kids, wrestling Kaliber Fry of PCM in the 2nd round consolations. Fry was strong and quick, using that to take down Elmquist on his way to the win. Elmquist had a chance, getting in on a couple shots but Fry countered and stayed out of trouble ending Elmquist Sophomore season with a 15-2 major decision. Beckett Hagen took the mat at 126-pounds for Carroll, battling Charlie Showalter of Hampton Dumont. Hagen fought had and nearly had some points late in the 1st period, getting his hands free before making a move to attack. The two wrestlers were called off the mat and Showalter earned a win by fall over Hagen at 2:54. Levi Dirkx of Carroll learned a lot in his first trip to State, moving into the 2nd round consolations against Aiden Hippen of Clear Lake. Dirkx says he will work to be stronger and quicker next year and hopes to move up in weight class. She lost to Hippen by fall in 1:22.

Cael Nelson turned the day around for Carroll, getting out to quick lead on Tate Germann of North Fayette Valley. Nelson led 8-0 before running into a little trouble late in the 2nd period. He bounced back and took control again to start the 3rd before giving up a few more points late but holding on for a 13-8 win. Nelson continued his strong day with a Tech Fall win over Kyler Sandholm of Red Oak in the 3rd round consolations. Nelson got a quick takedown and kept adding points. He had wrestled Sandholm earlier this season and knew how to attack him. Cooper Ludwig gave Carroll back-to-back winners, dominating Kellin Henry of Decorah in the 2nd round consolations. Ludwig was able to earn points with takedowns and back points and was never threatened. Ludwig moved into the 3rd consolations and earned a victory that was tighter than it appeared. Ludwig had a takedown late in the 1st period, getting a couple points for Ryker Dengler of West Liberty being carroll for grabbing the singlet. Dengler rallied in the 3rd period, but Ludwig held on for the 10-6 win. Owen Klocke was the final wrestler for Carroll to go 2-0 on Thursday, bringing a smile to his face. Klocke was had a hard battle in the 2nd round consolations, earning a pin against Raif Baack of Clear Lake. A late takedown and riding out the final 0:40 helped Klocke advance to Friday with a 3-1 win over Blake Mather of West Delaware in the 3rd round consolations.

Chase Ragaller at 165-pounds cruised into the semifinals with a win in 1:06 against Lance Helm of Albia. Ragaller was able to get in deep when he wanted to allow him to get the quick pin. Ragaller ran into one of the State’s toughest wrestlers in Brent Denhardt in the 6th round. Denhardt was able to slowly pull away from Ragaller, earning a 14-2 loss. Kieran Polking went 1-1 on Thursday, winning his first match by 4-0 aginst Jayden Kreitlow of Eagle Grove. That set him up against Braylan Beiber. Polking wrestled well, losing to Bieber by fall in 3:45. Quinten Polking closed it on the Tigers run in both the 2nd and 3rd Round Consolations. He came earned a win by Fall in 2:37, moving him into the 3rd round consolations. He looked like he had a shot to win it late, just missing back points.

Area wrestlers went 3-9 on Thursday morning.
