A dominant 3rd quarter helped Kuemper pick up their 13th straight win, knocking off Grand View Christian in the opening game of the Gilbert Showcase. The game went back and forth in the 1st half with eight lead changes and six ties before half. The Thunder held the biggest lead in the 1st half, up 15-9 late in the 1st quarter while Kuemper built a 29-26 lead late in the 2nd quarter. Grand View Christian established their post game, getting easy looks at the rim for Emiliano Barrantes and dribble penetration by Brayden Hoben. The Knights countered with a strong shooting half from Carter Putney, hitting 3-3’s in the 1st half and Tregan Beiter attacking the lane. Grand View Christian led 30-29 at half, but Kuemper shot out of the gate in the 2nd half, outscoring the Thunder 20-8. Their lead grew to as many as 13 in the 2nd half as they became the more aggressive and physical team, attacking the rim while shielding the shot blocking abilities of the Thunder.
Grand View Christian looked in the opening moments like they may take charge early, building a 5-0 lead while Kuemper seemed unsure of themselves on the offensive end. Carter Putney hit a huge 3, getting the Knights on the board. They chipped away with a pair of free throws from Brack Badding and a bucket in the lane from Tregan Beiter, tying the game at 7. Carson Kanne gave Kuemper their first lead, up 9-7 but Grand View Christian answered, building a 15-9 lead. Kuemper scored the final four points of the quarter on baskets by Jack Badding and Hans Kraus. A second Carter Putney 3, put Kuemper up 16-15 early in the 2nd quarter only to see the Thunder go up 18-16. Tregan Beiter tied the game at 18 and again at 20, then Putney hit another 3 and Kuemper was up 23-22. Grand View Christian quickly answered, going up 26-23 but Brock Badding nailed a 3, tying the game at 26. Michael Kasperbauer put the Knights up 29-26 but Grand View Christian scored the final 4-points of the half to lead 30-29 at half.
Three free throws by Brock Badding early in the 3rd quarter put the Knights up 34-32 and Kuemper never trailed again. Michael Kasperbauer made it a 6-point game with back-to-back baskets, followed by a bucket from Tregan Beiter and another 3 from Carter Putney, making it 45-34 Kuemper. The Knights grabbed their biggest lead at 51-38 on a 2 by Putney early in the 4th quarter. Grand View cut it to 7 but Brock Badding drained a 3 and the Knights never looked back.
Kuemper had three players in double figures with Carter Putney leading the way with 18-points to go with 3 steals. Brock Badding added 17-points with 7-7 free throws. Tregan Beiter finished with 15-points, Carson Kanne had a team high 7 assists and 5 rebounds.
The Knights improved to 13-1 on the season. They head to Glenwood on Monday.

Carroll hung tough into the 2nd quarter but foul trouble and a Dallas Center-Grimes 17-0 run to end the 1st half gave the Mustangs control of the game. They blew the game open in 3rd quarter, getting up by 35-points midway through the 3rd on their way to a 30-point win. The Tigers struggled on offense, hurt by turnovers, with five in a row in the 2nd quarter. Carroll led early but Dallas Center-Grimes took the lead for good late in the 1st quarter.
Stone Sibenaller hit a 3 from the corner, giving Carroll a 3-0 lead to start the game. They went up 5-2 on a fade away jumper from Evan Hammer and were up 7-3 on a bucket by Jared Mohr. The Mustangs responded with a 6-0 run to lead 9-7 before Hammer tied the game at 9. A Mustang 3 put them up 12-9 at the end of the 1st quarter. Dallas Center-Grimes scored four straight points to start the 2nd quarter, leading 16-9 but Evan Hammer answered, making it 18-11. Payton Wardell hit a 3, then attacked off the left wing, pulling Carroll within 23-16 with just over 5:00 left in the half. The Mustangs took control from their, scoring the final 17-points of the half as Carroll struggled with against the changing and trapping defenses, giving up too many easy breakout baskets.
Carroll had a mini run (7-2) in the 3rd quarter with back-to-back baskets from Ryan North and Evan Hammer with Jared Mohr adding another bucket as Carroll pulled within 59-29 but that was as close as they would get.
Evan Hammer ended the game with 16-points with Stone Sibenaller adding 7-points and 5 rebounds. Payton Wardell and Ryan North both scored 5-points.
The loss drops Carroll to 8-3 overall. The Tigers host Winterset on Tuesday.

Coon Rapids Bayard took control in the 1st half, building a 40-19 lead at half. They withstood a rally by CAM in the 3rd quarter, keeping command of the game, then finished off another win in the 4th quarter. The Crusaders shot 47.5% from the field, hitting 11-24 from three. They had 20 assists on 29 made baskets. The defense was solid, holding CAM to 5-18 from 3 but gave up 46.7% from the field overall for the Cougars. The Crusaders led 18-11 at the end of the 1st quarter, then gave up 24 in the 3rd quarter but scored 19-points in the 3rd to keep a double digit lead.
Cal Heydon was huge, scoring 28-points with 10 rebounds with Cade Behrens adding 20-points and 7 rebounds. The two combined to go 20-27 from the field with Behrens hitting 6-11 from three and Heydon 11-17 from inside the arc. Caden Oswald did a nice job running the offense, dishing out 7 assists with Parker Hays adding 11-points with 6 assists.
The Crusaders improve to 12-2 overall and 10-1 in the Rolling Valley, up a 1/2 game on Exira-EHK. They have won 4 straight heading into a home game on Monday with Ogden.

South Central Calhoun continued to play outstanding basketball, putting themselves in control of the race for the Twin Lakes Conference title. They won their 10th straight game, improving to 10-3 overall and 6-1 in the Twin Lakes Conference, in a tie with Alta-Aurelia and a 1/2 game up on Emmetsburg, Manson NW Webster and Newell Fonda and a full game up on East Sac in a crowded race. The Titans blew open a tight game in the 2nd quarter, outscoring the Warriors 21-4 to lead 34-16 at half. South Central Calhoun hit 44.6% from the field, going 8-22 from three. Their defense has been a key to their run and they held the Warriors to 16-61 from the field and 6-20 from beyond the arc.
Cole Higgins paced the offense with 22-points along with making 7 steals. Gavin Batta added 17-points to go with 9 rebounds and 3 blocked shots. Keegan Soard pulled down 8 rebounds while Andrew Anderson dished out 6 assists.
The Titans look to keep their roll going at West Bend Mallard on Tuesday.
