Kuemper led until the 6th inning, then watched the game slip away as Woodward Granger scores a pair of unearned runs in the 6th and holds on to beat Kuemper. The Knights finished with 8 hits but left 9-runners on base, getting their first runner on base with 1 or 2-outs too often, limiting their chances to move runners around and score. Credit the Hawks pitching staff for keeping an offense that had been cruising at bay, striking out 11 batters with a sophomore and a freshman combining to give up 2 earned runs with a walk and 2 hit-by-pitch. Woodward Granger kept the Knights from having a big innings, keeping themselves in striking distance until late. Then taking advantage of a couple Kuemper miscues late.
Woodward Granger loaded the bases in the top 1st with 1-out but a missed sacrifice bunt got their runner at 3rd in a pickle and Kuemper got out of the inning with no damage done. They took advantage in the bottom 1st. Logan Sibenaller singled, stole 2nd base and moved to 3rd on a deep fly ball to left from Benicio Lujano. Ethan Loew singled, scoring Sibenaller, giving Kuemper a 1-0 lead. Kuemper left 2-runners on base in the 1st, then stranded the bases loaded in the 2nd. That rally started with 2-outs and was benefited by a Hawk error. Woodward Granger stranded a pair of runners in the 3rd, having left 4 on base through the first 3 innings. Koby Lampman doubled in the 3rd for Kuemper but the Knights left him at 2nd, heading to the 4th. Logan Sibenaller had cruised through the 2nd inning, getting the Hawks in order. He did the same in the 4th, setting up a Kuemper rally in the bottom half. Max Irlmeier led off the 4th with a hit-by-pitch, moving to 2nd base on a sac bunt by Evan Loew. Irlmeier scored on a Sibenaller double, putting Kuemper up 2-0. The Hawks rally started in the 5th. Sam Sejnoha tripled with 2-outs, finishing the night 3-4. He after a Brody Nardini single. Nardini attempted to steal 2nd, getting in a pickle, scoring Sejnoha, cutting the Knights lead to 2-1. Kuemper threated to extend the lead in the bottom 5th, with 2 runners on base but had a runner thrown out at 3rd to end the inning. Collin Nardini started the 6th for the Hawks, reaching on a Kuemper error. A bunt moved the tying run into scoring position and after a popup for the 2nd out, Shaefer Hanson singled, scoring the tying run. Shaefer stole 2nd to put himself in scoring position and scored the lead run on a single by Landon Chambers. Kuemper had two innings to rally, getting a 2-out walk to Logan Sibenaller in the 6th but Freshman Brody Worley struck out the next batter to end the inning. The Knights held Woodward Granger in the 7th, getting them in order. The Knights came up in the bottom 7th, down 1 but weren’t able to get anyone on, ending the game as Worley struck out the final batter of the game.
The Knights outhit Woodward Granger 8-7, but left 9 guys on base, compared to the Hawks 5. Kuemper struck out 11 times while Woodward Granger struck out 4 times.
Logan Sibenaller, Ethan Loew and Koby Lampman all had 2 hits with Sibenaller and Lampman both doubling. Sibenaller added an RBI and scored once. Loew added an RBI. Trevor Rial and Evan Loew had Kuemper’s other hits with Loew having the team third double of the night. Logan Sibenaller pitched very well, going 7 innings, allowing 7 hits and 1 earned run while striking out 4.
The Knights end the season 25-11.
