History eluded Catherine Mayhall Monday, but the Knights still were able to pick up a solid win in extremely windy conditions.
The Knights were coming off a 2-0 day on Saturday where they got past West Central Valley and Boone, and the Monarchs were on a three-game winning streak. Mayhall was also eyeing a big individual accomplishment; she needed one more goal to surpass the Kuemper team record for most career goals by an individual player. Both teams’ efforts to score and even progress the ball across the pitch were thwarted by the extreme winds coming from the northeast. Corner kicks, goalie kicks, and even sky-high kicks were whipped across the pitch and were hard to locate. After a tough first half, both teams were unable to put the ball in the back of the net and were scoreless going into halftime. Kuemper had some shots on goal but were unable to get a score on the board.
Early in the second half, Lauren Boell was able to finally break through the Denison Schleswig defense with an early goal to get the Knights ahead 1-0 with 39:10 in the game. Around two and a half minutes later, Boell would strike again with another goal to give the Knights a padded 2-0 lead with 36:30 left to play. Boell had only one goal coming into this game, and she told Carroll Broadcasting she credits her teammates for setting her up for success. Another big play came at 34:05 when the Monarchs marched down the pitch and attempted a cross-shot goal that Brianna Wittrock was able to stretch out and save what could have been a game changing goal. While the wind continued to play a factor in the second half, the Kuemper defense came up clutch by creating big walls that made it impossible for Denison Schleswig to score. The Knights were able to escape the wind with a 2-0 win and now are on a three-game winning streak.
Despite not making history at this game, Mayhall says she credits all the success she’s seen to this year’s team and all the opportunities they have been awarded. The Knights are now 7-5 overall on the season. They are back in action on Thursday, May 4th when they travel to take on Greene County.

A battle of two cyclones unfolded as East Sac went up against high winds and the Harlan Cyclones Monday.
The Raiders were looking to break a current three-game losing streak while the Cyclones were handed their third loss of the season by Glenwood the game prior. East Sac got out of the gates with a strong look by Kenna Meyer who netted a goal with 29 minutes left in the first half. Davanee Boger was credited with the assist. Harlan didn’t let that 1-0 lead stand for too much longer as they were able to break through the Raider defense with a goal of their own at the 16-minute mark, tying the game at 1-1. That tie would remain until the halftime horn sounded.
East Sac Head Coach Bob Babe says his defense held strong for a good portion of the first half but just slipped up with that one goal. In the second half, both teams were again unable to see much of their offenses shine with the winds affecting a majority of the game. The Cyclones were able to find the back of the net once again at the 20-minute mark of the second half and took their first and only lead of the game at 2-1. They’d eventually ride out the remaining 20 minutes of the game to take home their eighth victory of the season and defeat the Raiders 2-1.
The loss drops the Raiders to 2-6 overall on the season. They are back in action on Tuesday, May 2nd when they host AHSTW.
