Carroll played one of their most complete games of the season, only trailed twice in the 1st quarter and never by more than 2 points as they pull away in the 2nd half for a 25-point win in the opening round of Substate. The Tigers defense forced Sergeant Bluff-Luton to shoot from the outside and after some initial struggles on the boards, they held the Warriors to one shot and were able frustrate them as the game went on. Carroll outscored the Warriors 36-17 in the 2nd half and 19-6 in the 4th quarter. Sergeant Bluff-Luton made a brief run at Carroll early in the 3rd after the Tigers held a 29-23 lead at half. They trimmed the lead to 31-27 but Carroll responded with a 6-0 run and never led by led than 5 the rest of the game.
Evan Hammer put Carroll up to start the game, hitting a nice fade away after getting into the lane. Tyler Smith answered with a three, the first of his 13-poins in the 1st half. Jack White, who worked hard inside all night, knocked down a pair of free throws and Carroll led 4-3. Dylon Schaap hit a second three for the Warriors to open the game, and SBL led 6-4. The Warriors went cold from the outside, finishing with 5-3’s. Trey Hunter, who was outstanding getting in the lane and finishing all night tied the game at 6, then put the Tigers ahead 8-6. The Warriors tied the game at 10 but Jack White put Carroll up 12-10 at the end of the 1st quarter. They would never relinquish the lead again. Tanner Gotto started the 2nd quarter with a three, the first of five for him in the game. Carroll was up 15-10, extending the lead to 18-12 on a bucket by Jack White. White scored moments later, extending the Carroll lead to 20-13. Tanner Gotto hit another three and Carroll took their biggest lead at 23-13. The Warriors cut into the lead and Tyler Smith hit a tough shot in the late just before the end of the half but missed the free throw and Carroll was up 29-23 at half.
Evan Hammer got Carroll out to a nice start in the 3rd, pushing the Tigers lead to 31-23. Sergeant Bluff-Luton scored 4 straight pulling within 31-27 but Trey Hunter hit a pair of free throws, followed by a Tanner Gotto bucket and a Jack White bucket and Carroll looked to be off and running. The Warriors responded again, pulling within 37-32 but Trey Hunter scored to push it to 39-32 and Tanner Gotto drained a three and Carroll was up 10. Hunter closed out the quarter with a bucket and Carroll led by 12, heading to the 4th quarter. Jack White scored to open the 4th quarter and Carroll quickly took control, keeping the lead in double digits with buckets by Bryce Berlau and Evan Hammer. Trey Hunter and Tanner Gotto combined to score the next 10 points for Carroll with Gotto draining a three, pushing the lead to 58-37 with a couple minutes remaining.
Trey Hunter and Tanner Gotto both scored 18 points and both were strong on the boards with Hunter pulling down 9 and Gotto 7 rebounds. Jack White added 12 points and 6 rebounds. Bryce Berlau finished with 8 points and 6 rebounds and Evan Hammer dished out a team high 6 assists.
The Tigers improved to 12-9 with their third straight win. They head to Bishop Heelan on Thursday on KIKD 106.7. Heelan topped LeMars 49-47 in overtime.
