Coon Rapids Bayard At CAM Anita- Class 1A District 14

Coon Rapids Bayard 57

CAM Anita 42

Coon Rapids Bayard had a game plan, after falling twice this season to CAM Anita, they switched their defense to contain Seth Hensley and it worked to perfection. Hensley fouled out early in the 4th quarter with 2 points thanks a Parker Hays working his tail off to deny Hensley the ball. Cal Heydon took over on the offensive end, scoring 24 of his team high 26 points in the 2nd half. The Crusaders took control of the game in the 3rd, outscoring the Cougars 21-6.

Cal Heydon scored the first points of the game but didn’t score again until the 2nd half. CAM Anita knocked down a couple early threes and led Coon Rapids Bayard 8-4. Parker Hays cut it to 8-6 and Cade Behrens hit the first of his three-threes in the 1st half and Coon Rapids Bayard led 9-8. A bucket by Wyatt Oswald and and second-three by Behrens put the Crusaders up 14-10 after the 1st quarter. The lead grew to 18-10 on a three by Behrens but Coon Rapids Bayard struggled to score in the 2nd quarter. CAM Anita made a late run, outscoring the Crusaders 11-3 from their until half.

The 3rd quarter changed the whole game. Lance Clayburg scored inside on the Crusaders first possession. They wanted to pound the ball inside to work on Seth Hensley who had three fouls at half. Cal Heydon scored six straight and the Crusaders were up for good. CAM Anita pulled within 31-27 but Parker Hays hit a big three, then Cal Heydon scored six in a row. After another Parker Hays bucket the Crusaders were up 42-27 at the end of the 3rd quarter. CAM Anita pulled within 13 early in the 4th but Coon Rapids Bayard kept attacking with Cal Heydon and Lance Clayburg. Heydon hit 12 of 16 free throws in the 2nd half and Parker Hays scored 7 of his 11 points in the 2nd half as the Crusaders moved on with a 1st round district win.

Audubon at IKM-Manning – Class 1A District 14

IKM-Manning 60

Audubon 44

Audubon came into their first-round playoff game against IKM-Manning with some momentum but was quickly ambushed by an aggressive defense Monday night.

The Wheelers drained 13 three-pointers in their 62-57 win over IKM-Manning last week in their regular-season finale. The Wolves weren’t going to allow Audubon to get going like that again and they countered their offense with a great defensive effort in this first-round playoff game. IKM-Manning would get on a short scoring run to start the game at 4-0 before Audubon started to climb back and got their first lead of the game at 8-6 thanks to a Carson Bauer three-pointer. Ben Ramsey got on a run in transition and gave the Wolves the lead back at 9-8. Toward the end of a competitive first quarter, Ross Kusel drained a three-pointer with seven seconds remaining to give IKM-Manning the 12-8 lead going into the second quarter. Reed Hinners had himself a game and started off scoring the first seven points for the Wolves. Audubon cut into IKM-Manning’s lead more to start the next quarter, getting it down to 12-10 before the Wolves went on a run. They’d go 7-0 after that with a three-pointer from Kusel and a bucket from Ben Ramsey in transition to get ahead 17-10. Defensively the Wolves kept the Wheelers’ best at bay, including leading scorer Edward Miller to just six points in the first half. The Wolves used that early scoring run to get ahead 25-14.

IKM-Manning gets their wave of momentum rolling in the second half, starting with another scoring run going 9-2. Hinners continued to lead the Wolves in the third quarter and had another six points added to his stat line. With Lane Sams, Cooper Irlemier, and Caden Keller all draining a three-pointer, the Wolves were cooking and got ahead 45-27 going into the fourth quarter. The Wheelers had no offense that could match what IKM-Manning was doing defensively. In the final eight minutes, the Wheelers tried for a late-game comeback but fell short. Hinners was clutch at the free throw line, going 10-13 overall, and helped lift the Wolves past the Wheelers 60-44.

Hinners’ night included 23 points and eight rebounds while two other Wolves scored double-digit points, Ross Kusel with 10 points and Ben Ramsey with 12 points. For Audubon Carson Bauer led the way with 13 points and Edward Miller had 10 points. The Wheelers’ season comes to an end with a final record of 6-16. The Wolves are moving on in the playoffs and they will travel to take on ACGC on Thursday, February 16th.
