Coon Rapids Bayard got the start they needed while Audubon struggled early but played much better in the 2nd half. The Crusaders open the season 1-0, winning on the road, using a 20-1 2nd quarter to build a big lead against the Wheelers who start the season 0-1.
Rylee Brittan hit a pair of free throws to give Audubon a 2-0 lead but struggles from the field and turnovers against the Crusaders aggressive full court defense helped the Crusaders pull away in the 1st half. Coon Rapids Bayard tied the game at 2, then took a 4-2 lead as Malia Clayburg and Breeley Clayburg were dominating inside. Anna Hart and Aubrey Hofbauer provided some offensive punch, with Hofbauer hitting a three and Hart getting a steal and layup and the Crusaders were up 11-4 early in the 2nd quarter. The Wheelers were rushing their shots, thanks to the Crusaders defense speeding them up. Sienna Albertsen hit a free throw for Audubon, cutting it to 15-5 but that would be their only points in the 2nd quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard went on a 21-0 run before the Wheelers got on the board again in the 3rd quarter. Coon Rapids Bayard controlled the backboards with Malia and Breeley Clayburg, helping them lead 29-5 at half. They came out sharp in the 3rd with Anna Hart’s defense creating opportunities for the Crusaders. They built a 38-6 lead but Audrey Jensen hit back-to-back threes for the Wheelers which sparked them. They pulled within 38-15 but that would be as close as they would get.
Breeley Clayburg paced the Crusaders with 20 points to go with 6 rebounds while Malia Clayburg pulled down 12 rebounds. Anna Hart had a big impact on the game with 7 points, 4 assists and 5 steals. Megan Gray added 3 assists.
Audrey Jensen led Audubon with 10 points along with 5 rebounds. Kade Sporrer added 7 points and 6 rebounds while Harlow Miller was strong on the boards, grabbing 10 rebounds off the bench.
The Crusaders will head home on Tuesday to play Stanton while the Wheelers will host Missouri Valley.
