Emmetsburg At Kuemper at Buena Vista- Class 1A Opening Round
Kuemper 35
Emmetsburg 8
Kuemper set the tempo for the game on the first play from scrimmage as Emmetsburg tried to go deep down the Knights sideline and DJ Vonnahme read the play perfectly, getting a bead on the pass and intercepting it. He returned the ball to the E-Hawks 41-yard line. Kuemper didn’t score on the possession, turning it over on downs at E-Hawk 33-yard line but Kuemper took charge shortly after. The defense didn’t give up more than one 1st down on a 1st half drive for the E-Hawks, keeping them from chewing up clock with their vaunted running game. Kuemper held Emmetsburg to 151-yards on the ground and 171-yards overall. That helped keep the Knights defense off the field and the offense humming in the 2nd quarter. Taye Vonnahme put Kuemper on the board on their second possession, taking an option pitch from DJ Vonnahme and racing 74-yards down the sidelines for a touchdown. The Knights led 7-0, less than five minutes into the game. They were able to establish the ground game, even with Taye Vonnahme getting injured and having to sit out the rest of the game, finishing with 145-yards rushing on 6 carries. The Knights finished with 322-yards on the ground, passing for 119-yards. The lead was 7-0 heading into the 2nd quarter, when Kuemper blew the game open. DJ Vonnahme scored on a 26-yard run early in the 2nd quarter, extending the lead to 14-0. An Emmetsburg fumble at their own 30-yard line led to another Kuemper score as DJ Vonnahme found Trevor Rial for a 1-yard touchdown, making it 21-0. The Knights turned a blocked punt on the next E-Hawk possession into another touchdown and led 28-0 after DJ Vonnahme scored on a 7-yard run.
Kuemper got the ball to start the 2nd half but was forced to punt. Emmetsburg turned it over on a muffed punt, recovered by John Boes and DJ Vonnahme scored on a 25-yard run, putting the Knights up 35-0. The continuous clock sped up the game with the Knights getting the ball twice the rest of the game, punting and running out the clock to end the game. Emmetsburg ended the shutout bid with 2:14 left in the game when Carson Baak scored on a 21-yard run, ending a 13 play, 80-yard drive. That drive was nearly half their yards in the game as the Kuemper defense was dominant, creating a fumble, an interception. The Knights special teams also recovered a fumble and blocked a punt.
DJ Vonnahme was 9-17 passing for 110-yards and a touchdown. He added 76-yards on 5 carries and 3 rushing touchdowns. Chris Mohr had 53-yards on 8 carries and Tayr Vonnahme carried the ball 6 times for 145-yards with a 74-yard touchdown run. Taye added a catch for 25-yards. Trevor Rial had 3 catches for 39-yards and a touchdown. Koby Lampman had 3 catches for 27-yards.
