Carroll had an answer for every run that Sioux Center made, holding on for a thrilling 58-55 win, sending the Tigers back to the State Tournament for the first time since 2022. The Tigers only trailed once, by 1-point and were tied once moments later. Trey Tassell hit two huge shots to give Carroll the lead for good in the 3rd quarter. Carroll led by 9-points in the 1st quarter but a 6-0 Warriors run made it a 3-point game heading into the 2nd quarter. The Tigers led by as many as 6-points early in the 2nd quarter but Sioux Center felt like they won the quarter pulling within 24-23 before Carroll ended the half on a 7-3 run. Sioux Center grabbed the lead at 33-32 but Trey Tassell hit a pair of 3’s and Carroll never trailed again, though they couldn’t put the Warriors away.
Carroll started quick with a 6-0 lead with Jared Mohr scoring at the rim, Mac Collison drilling a three and Mohr adding a free throw. The lead grew to 13-4 on a rebound and basket by Lual Tharjiath and were up 15-6 after a Jared Mohr bucket. Sioux Center ended the 1st quarter on a 6-0 run and Carroll led 15-12 going to the 2nd quarter. Lual Tharjiah put Carroll up 17-12 early in the 2nd quarter but the Warriors scored the next 4-points. Trey Tassell had a 5-0 run with a three and a layup and Carroll stretched the lead to 22-16. Jared Mohr kept Carroll up 24-20 as the Warriors kept it close. Sioux Center hit a three and trailed 24-23 but Tallon Crandall hit a clutch three and Carroll led 27-23 late in the half. Mac Collison and Jared Mohr helped Carroll close the quarter on a 7-4 run as they led 31-26 at half.
Carroll struggled to score early in the 2nd half and Sioux Center opened the half with a 7-1 run to lead 33-32. Trey Tassell hit a three and Carroll was up 35-33 but Sioux Center tied it at 35. Tassell added another three and Carroll took the lead for good. Sioux Center pulled with 41-40 late in the 3rd quarter but Carroll held a 45-42 heading to the 4th after Landon Petersen scored to end the quarter. The Tigers were able to stretch the lead early in the 4th quarter. Jared Mohr made it 49-44 and 51-47 with a pair of free throws. Lual Tharjiath had a nice bucket on a cut on the baseline and Jared Mohr scored to make it 55-47. Lual Tharjiath had another bucket on a baseline cut and Trey Tassell pushed the lead to 58-52 with a free throw. Sioux Center got a three, making it close but they weren’t able to get a good look on the final 0:14 and Carroll held on to win 58-55.
Jared Mohr led Carroll with 18-points along with 3 steals, Trey Tassell added 17-points and Lual Tharjiath finished with 7-points and 5 blocks. Mac Collison scored 8-points and Tallon Crandall finished with 6-points.
The Tigers improved to 20-5 and will find out on Tuesday night who they play in the State Quarterfinals on Monday, March 9th.
