Exira-EHK earned their way to the State Girls Basketball Tournament with a strong defensive performance against a very talented and good GTRA team. The Spartans took control in the 2nd quarter, using a aggressive 2-3 zone to hold the Titans to 4-points, not allowing them to dribble penetrate into the lane to kick for open 3’s. When the Titans got shots from the outside they weren’t able to connect while the Spartans used a 14-0 run to take a 23-11 lead at half. They extended the lead to 17-points in the 3rd but the Titans kept coming back, pulling within 9-points in the 4th quarter. GTRA went on a 11 to 4 run before the Spartans salted it away, hitting nine free throws down the stretch.

The game changed leads five times in the 1st quarter with Harlow Miller putting the Spartans up for the first time at 4-3. GTRA went back up 5-4 but Taryn Petersen made it 6-5. After GTRA went 7-6, Jaelynn Petersen put the Spartans up for good at 8-7 at the end of the 1st quarter. Taryn Petersen hit a free throw to start the 2nd quarter but GTRA tied the game at 9 and Jaelynn Petersen again came up big with a pair of free throws and the Titans never tied the game again. The Spartans went on a 14-0 run with Zoey Rasmussen igniting it with a corner three, making it 14-9. Jaelynn Petersen added two more baskets and Zoey Ramussen hit a big three, making it 21-9. Taryn Petersen scored on a layup and the Spartans were up 23-9. They led 23-11 at half.

Riley Miller scored to start the 2nd half but the Titans scored six in a row and the Spartans called a timeout. Taryn Petersen made a pair of free throws and Jaelynn Petersen scored to make it 43-25 early in the 4th quarter. GTRA chipped away at the lead, pulling within 47-38. Taryn Petersen made one of two free throws and Harlow Miller grabbed the rebound and was fouled. GTRA was called for a technical foul and Exira-EHK added two more free throws and got the ball, making another pair of free throws and put the game away, winning 57-38.

Taryn Petersen led a balanced Spartan attack with 21-points, 5 rebounds, 6 assists and 6 steals. Jaelynn Petersen added 14-points and 6 rebounds and Harlow Miller had 9-points and 15 rebounds. Kadence Brannan Sporrer finished with 7 rebounds and 6 assists while Zoey Rasmussen added 9-points and Riley Miller was terrific on defense.

The Spartans head into the State Tournament 22-1 and are seeded 6th. They take on 3rd seeded St Albert at 6:45 on Wednesday on KIKD 106.7

Coon Rapids-Bayard fell to St. Albert in the Regional Final on Wednesday night. The Crusaders lost by 20 but the score was deceptive as they were in the game all the way until the 4th. St. Albert scored to open up the game, but it was back and forth the whole first quarter, with CRB taking a timeout down 11-6 in the first. The Saintes would lead 20-13 after one. The Crusaders battled in the second and even got a timeout from St. Albert after some momentum with a 28-23 deficit with 3:50 to go. It would be 34-29 St. Albert at the half, but this was the way CRB wanted it, and that was them having a chance. The Crusaders came out of the break good with a three to cut it to 34-32, but an 8-0 run prompted a CRB timeout as they trailed 42-32. CRB came out of the timeout with their own 8-0 ru,n and that got a St. Albert timeout at 42-40. It was a 3-point game heading into the fourth at 47-44. The Crusaders struggled in the fourth and fell 68-48. Anna Hart led the Crusaders with 16, as she leads one of the greatest Basketball groups CRB has had, with 8 seniors on the team.
