Carroll suffered a heart breaking loss on Friday in their final game as a member of the Raccoon River Conference. Carroll trailed most of the game, falling down by 15 in the 3rd quarter but rallied back to lead by as many as 5 in the closing minutes, but Gilbert made a couple key plays down the stretch, hit a few free throws and pulled out a 75-72 win. Gilbert shot the ball really well in the 1st half as Carroll didn’t close out on shooters quickly and gave up too easy of dribble penetration. The lead bounced back and forth in the first few minutes but Gilbert used a 7-0 run to get control and led 17-12 after the 1st quarter. The lead grew to 12 a couple times in the 2nd quarter but Carroll closed the gap and trailed 39-30 at half. An 8-2 Gilbert run to start the 3rd quarter and they led 47-32. Carroll went to a full court pressure, sparking their energy with big plays by Landon Petersen and Trey Tassell and Carroll pulled within 49-44. Gilbert responded and led 59-52 going to the 4th quarter. Carroll again rallied in the 4th quarter and Mac Collison had a layup to give them a 60-59 lead. Carroll led until the closing minute with Gilbert taking a 73-72 lead on their way to the win.
The lead changed hands three times in the first few minutes with Carroll leading 2-0 and Gilbert going up 3-2. A Lual Tharjiath dunk gave Carroll a 5-3 lead after Trey Tassell made a free throw, tying it at 3. Gilbert answered with their second-three and led 6-5. Gilbert went on a 7-0 run and led 10-5 before Jared Mohr hit a free throw and a three to make it 12-9. A Mac Collison free throw made it 12-10 Gilbert. Gilbert hit a three late and lead 17-12 going to the 2nd quarter. Lual Tharjiath scored to start the 2nd quarter and Carroll was down 17-14 but Gilbert went on a 7-0 un and led 24-14. Jared Mohr drained a three but Gilbert kept up the pressure, going up 31-19. Gilbert kept the lead at 12, shooting it well in the 1st half and led 33-21 before Carroll made a late run. Lual Tharjiath had another dunk and Mac Collison had a bucket and a pair of free throws, Pulling Carroll within 35-30 but Gilbert scored the final 4-points of the half.
Trey Tassell hit a shot for Carroll early in the 3rd but they struggled on offense and Gilbert built a 47-32 lead. Carroll came out with more pressure in the full-court and found some life. Trey Tassell hit a pair of free throws, followed by two free throws by Landon Petersen with Jared Mohr making bucket and free throw and Carroll pulled within 47-39. A Landon Petersen steal and layup pulled Carroll within 49-44 late in the 3rd quarter but Gilbert pushed the lead to 59-52 going to the 4th quarter. Mac Collison hit a three to start the 4th and Carroll gained momentum. Jared Mohr hit a three and Mac Collison had a rebound and layup to put Carroll up 60-59. Lual Tharjiath scored to push the Carroll lead to 62-59. Collison scored again and Carroll led 64-60. Moments later Mac Collison hit a big three and Carroll led 67-62. A Trey Tassell basket and a Mac Collison free throw kept Carroll in front, 70-66. Carroll kept the lead on a rebound dunk by Lual Tharjiath, putting them up 72-68. Carroll had a couple missed opportunities and Gilbert took advantage, going on a 5-0 run to lead 73-72. Carroll had two chances in the final 0:10 but weren’t able to score and Gilbert hit a pair of free throws to seal the win.
Jared Mohr was huge with 26-points and 14 rebounds, Mac Collison had 16-points and Lual Tharjiath added 14-points, 5 rebounds and 5 block. Trey Tassell contributed 10-points.
Carroll falls to 16-5 and will head to Harlan on Tuesday.
