Kuemper at Storm Lake

Kuemper    85

Storm Lake   79

Kuemper and Storm Lake were a show for the ages on Monday evening. Both teams rose to #1 in Class 3A and Class 2A, respectively. The Tornadoes came in at 13-1 and had been a dominant top-5 team in Class 3A all season. The Knights came in at 15-3 on the season with losses to 3A #5 Carroll, 3A #7 Clear Lake, and 4A #4 Dowling. Both teams came out very sharp offensively, and the game was back-and-forth. Jaidyn Coon had 5 of 5 Storm Lake points early, and both teams traded baskets. Kuemper was able to pull away and take a 25-20 lead into the 2nd quarter. The game was chippy the whole time, with both teams picking up plenty of fouls. The Knights played solid defense, but with a team like Storm Lake, there was no way to completely shut them down, and the Tornadoes had a shot at the buzzer to take the lead, but would miss as Kuemper led 40-38 going into the halftime break. There were many high-energy plays as Griffin Glynn had a backdoor cut and a two-hand jam. Jaidyn Coon and Timothy Yanga both had a pair of dunks, which hyped up the almost sold-out crowd at Storm Lake High School. Storm Lake and Kuemper both came out hot in the 3rd as Storm Lake picked up a 1-point lead during the 3rd, which was quickly flipped back to Kuemper. The Knights shot the ball very well from the three-point line and had good rotation, which created many clear lanes and backdoor cuts for easy buckets. During the 4th, 4 of the Knights had 4 fouls from about 1:30 left in the game. The Tornadoes had Jaidyn Coon for a layup, which was blocked by Jack Badding, and into the hands of Cam Boyd, which killed the lead down to 3 with a minute to play. Kuemper was able to get to the line and knock down freethrows late to pick up an 85-79 win on the road. Ryan Clair led the Knights with 29 points, and Dylan Schon worked the glass with 9 rebounds. Kuemper solitifies their bid to remain the #1 team in 2A.

Carroll shot the ball well and got every senior in the game on senior night as they cruised to a big non-conference win. All of the seniors scored in the game with Mason Stitz and Trey Tassell both making 3-3’s. The Tigers made 13-3’s in the game but Atlantic shot it well from the outside as well, hitting 9-3’s, four more than they average per game.
